I wish we had a leader like him. What a great speech.

Basically saying we should look after ourselves as sovereign nations, globalisation was a con, increase defence spending, protect our own borders and re-industrialise? https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=dTvFnC-oFGw&pp=y...
The chattering classes loved it, but when Orban/Farage say it they are like 'ohhhh nooo, extreme far-right rhetoric'
Funny old world, especially when he's just tried to re-align with China because another 3 years of distasteful Trump would be too much to bear, like sinking a boat because you don't like the current captain. Anyway, onwards with Chagos, extra-national law obedience, off-shoring of our power manufacturing, can't tell you what a woman is, petty meddling government.
Amazing how downstream to aesthetics politics really is, but nice not to be a pariah anymore.

I took away look after yourself BUT make coalitions and partnerships with other like minded states so that mid power countries can offset the bullying behaviour of more powerful states rather then simply be g subservient. The chattering classes loved it, but when Orban/Farage say it they are like 'ohhhh nooo, extreme far-right rhetoric'

Considering he's been on his travels making deals with those paragons of liberal democracy Qatar and China I'm not sure the Canadians would appreciate those countries being classed as "like minded"....Some parts of his speech were ok - focusing on defence, fuel and food is refreshing after the many years of preaching Net Zero - which is useless for all 3 - but overall it did seem a lot of impressive sounding words to defend cosying up to seem deeply dubious administrations.

Ok, but China? Like minded?Sure the usa is nuts but China are their own sort of nuts. They are not Canada's friend.
I've not watched his speech, but based on the above i would be worried carny is burning bridges and might not like where he has crossed to.

Trump's burning bridges. Carney's maybe, I dunno, trying to strike the last match from a damp book a few miles away from the nearest bridge.Sure the usa is nuts but China are their own sort of nuts. They are not Canada's friend.

Regarding the morality of cosying up to dubious regimes - I don't disagree with you but just to point out some hypocrisy - i can't think of a single nation including the UK that hasn't done that. we're happy to help israel kill 70,000 palestinians but when Iran does it......

Qatar and China aren't attacking Canada economically, or making stupid comments about annexing them.

Probably worth looking into the reports of Chinese interference in Canadian elections, and who supported the (internationally recognised) terrorists Israel were aiming for...Regarding the morality of cosying up to dubious regimes - I don't disagree with you but just to point out some hypocrisy - i can't think of a single nation including the UK that hasn't done that. we're happy to help israel kill 70,000 palestinians but when Iran does it......

Despite misgivings about Trump I'd suggest many sharks have been jumped if you think the US are worse partners that the two aforementioned dictatorships.....

Trust me , you don't !
Carney has the backing of an outraged Canadian public to switch to a smart diversification of risk and self-sufficiency strategy. China and others may have their own moral hazards, but they cannot be worse than USA sovereign risk. USA is almost un-investible right now for long term projects.
Am waiting for the penny to drop and the big USA clown car to dissemble; and the smart ones like Carney will have prepared for that event.
Starmer. please take some notes and begin action. Trump will do what Trump wants to; everyone else then gets their chances to react which Trump cannot prevent.

Why?
Carney is extremely comfortable speaking to the elites at WEF , finance is his background and he's been reeling out these speeches for years and the audience laps it up . Trouble being there is nothing new , nothing for Canadians , no new policies on housing manufacturing or investment . Canada is still broken after ten years of that feckwit Trudeau and it needs saving , Carney has done SFA so far for Canadians .
I’d say Carney is “right man right place”…yes he may have a lot to do economically but I’d say he’s navigated the last year better than 95% of politicians would have. Without doubt his background as a Central Banker has helped enormously. No idea how he is perceived domestically though.
I sought it out after seeing so much made of it, have to admit I was disappointed - seemed nothing more than competently full of platitudes. Which is fine I guess, he's certainly slick enough and presents well, but hardly worth going wild over.
Maybe the bar has fallen so low that someone making a grownup sounding speech without their trousers falling down just seems so much better by comparison...
