Does it really ever change though ? I was a kid in the early 80's expecting to see a very bright light at any moment.

As the father of a teenage son I'd agree

My father fought in WW2 as did various uncles as well as in Korea, Malaya and Aden, my grandfather in WW1

I think I picked a good period to live my youth

I saw loads of bright lights in the 80's but that was mostly drugs smile Seriously, the last 60 years, since the Cuban missile crisis have been the most settled since1945.

Things have never looked worse for this generation. I wish them all the best, but fear the worst.

I also have a dashboard for ex-admirals who claim we should be building more ships, ex-generals who claim we should be building more tanks and ex-air commodores who claim we should be building more 4 star hotels in potential hot spots...

The only thing we should be building are drones and drone defences , as the Ukraine war has shown, no country is ready for this new warfare.
Drones controlled by AI is some next level skynet st.

Who knew Terminator 2 was a glimpse into the future back then, and a documentary now.

Indeed. Some of the retired ex military wheeled out by the press these days are quite something!
I suspect hardly any of them have actually been involved in an active war, let alone know anything about the inner workings of CENTCOM.
I was lead to believe that nuclear war was inevitable during the 80s, with instructions to hide under the dining table upon hearing the 'alarm' in order to avoid being vaporised.
I very much doubt there was even an alarm system....

scaremongering- Russia have nothing to fight with, no armour, no air power and over a million killed and injured in Ukraine (bear i mind they only have a population of 145 million). They aren’t going to open a new front anywhere, no kit, not enough people or technology - this is just typical Putin bully boy bullst

There was an alarm locally when I was a kid I remember them testing it every so often. WW2 Sounding air raid siren on top of a block of flats.

This. They are struggling in a war with a single country. They aren't going to attack a NATO country, even without the US.

Yeah, might get an email from them asking us if we would like to blow ourselves up as Russia is experiencing a period of exceptionally high demand.

I really don’t see the point, Ukraine is now sunk cost that can’t possibly ever achieve a result which will provide a payback, not sure who has the upper hand but now we are in the fifth year is illuminating, big bad Russia is still rolling around on the ground with little old Ukraine.

Personally I don’t want all our young men to get killed like Russia, which is basically a war with country attached, they can’t help themselves. They invade and when people retaliate the go “there, told you the hate is”.

At the risk of sounding like the Wealdstone Raider They’ve got no tanks, they’ve got no planes, they’ve got no boats and all their soldiers are criminals, sick and/or untrained.

If only they maybe thought about cooperating, trade and tourism but no, has to be invading, Putin is a stupid old living in the past who no can’t stop as he will usurped and be killed.

They aren’t going to invade the UK, think we would see them coming, don’t think we are for an away fixture, we are blessed with not having Russia as a direct neighbour. I have no issue with the Russian people, it’s not “Russophobia” it’s daft old murderous aphobia, particularly annoying as he is such a scardey st bag with his big tables and body doubles, pathetic Dobby lookalike.

I did a bit of business with Russian engineering companies prior to the war, they are truly a ghastly people and frankly the more that get chucked in the meat grinder the better.

You make a lot of good points that I agree with, what intrigues me is this-can you imagine if a load of Russian parachutists ( and I mean a load!) landed on numerous airbases in this country, how long before our military could actually respond with any real force? Our airforce is next to nothing, I doubt we’d dare shoot at anything until it was too late … obviously Russia can’t do anything like this at the moment but if anything happened we would literally be caught like a rabbit in the headlights
We need to ramp up our defence spending right now-fk net zero spend it on defence

We have to be eternally grateful for the fight the Ukrainians have put up. If they had rolled over, Russia would have pushed on into Moldova and the Baltics. Which would have led to us being directly involved.

There very much was an alarm system with network of control rooms and alert sirens

I was in a couple of the underground bunkers, we had to go in periodically and fire them up and make test radio calls

Every police stn had a direct link with two way comms and a loudspeaker alert system and a siren on the roof of the building which had to be tested regularly, but only by sounding the all-clear

We also had to do a day's mandatory civil defence training every year

There was also huge amounts of "deferred facilities" and stored equipment such as trains, trucks, fire engines and ambulances

There was also the "police mobile column" where numbers of police were sent on several week long deployments outside of the cities to remote army camps from which they could then, in a worse care scenario, return to police the ruins

Agreed. Its surprising so many people don't know that we have pilots ready 24/7 to react to inbound aircraft, and that the Russians probe our airspace on a regular basis prompting a response.
