Very sorry to hear this, I knew he only had days left.

He was a good mate in Saddleworth before he went to Leeds university around 1978 , after which he became famous as a radio and TV personality.

His book "No off switch" is a great read.

I remember listening to his program while working as an icecream for pocket money as a student.
Lots of Reggae, African, Country and South American music I would never have heard anywhere else.

His breath of music knowledge was incredible.

He used to be Billy Bragg's roadie in the early days.

It does explain why he has a bald head though.

Started off on what we called "hard vans", Bedford CFs and MK II Transits selling scooped ice cream then worked my way up into whippy vans, a Bedford CF with a Carpigiani direct drive softee machine the a massive (big as a bus) Mercedes 608 with a generator in the back running a triple head Taylor machine.
And keeping it relevant to the subject Andy Kershaw playing on the radio.

I once drank most of his rider at a gig he was putting on, which was a bit daft as I was driving the van with the PA system in it. More bizarrely, I was pulled on the way home, but the coppers were looking for a van that had been out ram raiding, they told me that they knew I'd been drinking, so take it steady. Thirty odd years ago, doubt that would happen now.
