Blimey they don't mess around over there do they!
Hopefully as it seems there is other mitigating circumstances common sense will prevail.

I'm not that confident of the chances of a woman to be treated fairly on such a charge in Dubai. But what do I know?
Why is that, Randy?

I was asking you for your opinion on why women are treated this way in UAE. You're a PH lefty, but not one of the 'usual suspects' - that's why I'm interested

I absolutely do not support religions where they treat women (or gay people) badly. What I would call "badly" anyway. I'd add that whilst I dont particularly mind being referred to as a "lefty" I'm more "woke" than lefty as I am in favour of tight control over public finances. I've said on PH more than once that I'd happily vote Tory if they lay off the "anti-woke" stuff and concentrate on money.

I'll leave it there, wouldn't want to deprive CountyLines of a superficial surface level discussion that avoids any awkward questions. It's not like this topic is going away, is it!

The reason I asked is that I've noticed a seismic shift in the tone of discourse on reddit, which skews heavily left. They're still pro-EU, hate the tories, and loathe farage, but the back-to-back body blows of Nowak + Belfast seem to have broken something in people's beliefs.
The most notable of which is that, for the first time ever (at least in my experience), you can observe the emergence of white people moving from being the object of identity politics discourse to being practitioners of it - speaking as a group identity rather than about one. This was completely unimaginable just a few short years ago.
Not an area of the forum I normally come to but was interested in this story on the BBC today.
From reading I think the actual event happened Monday so it’s a quick turnaround to the conclusion they’ve come to.
Always a funny one Dubai, as they do seem to have that ‘risk’ when you visit. I’ve never been myself but these stories do happen from time to time it seems.

Like a lot of the Middle East, fantastic to visit, but mess up and the other face of the region can show and it’s nowhere near as pretty.
I grew up in the region - and as a young male I had effectively free rein going out in public from a very young age, without parents and was totally safe.
One of my older sisters was brought home one afternoon by the religious police who said if she left the house with a short skirt again, they would arrest her and paint her legs black.
Whilst some things have ‘improved’, you only need commit a relatively minor ‘crime’ and suddenly it’s a very different time.
