Yet another demonstration of the dangers of misinformation.

In my professional career I've seen a case where HIV+ expectant parents refused antiretroviral treatments to protect their kid upon birth because the despotic government of whatever African nation they were from had told them that Aids doesn't exist, and it's an evil western plot to enslave their nation with debt...

That was a Court of Protection "best interests" case where the hospital sought an order to give the unborn child treatment against the parents' wishes because otherwise the parents would have willingly allowed their Aids to be passed on to their new baby.

People who spead this kind of disinformation deserve a special place in hell.

Well they may have been born here but the correlation between ethnicity and antivaxxers is obvious.

Not that it matters. We can't kick out the (few) UK anti vaxxers we can certainly stop importing people like the people in the OP. It's shocking that people are dying of diseases that were largely extinct in tbe UK 30 years ago. If you haven't been vaccinated the UK isn't the place for you.

Nice to see this got diverted by the righteous.

I can't help thinking that this might be another one of those cases where a bit of benevolent paternalism maybe wasn't the best plan, and it might have just been better to leave things alone? As with many interventions that aim to help one thing and cause lots of problems down the line.

Ebola normally doesn't get too far because it's just too nasty, but we've now got concentrations of contagious victims being treated and people travelling in and out which are both great ways to sustain and spread the outbreak.


The actual behaviour with the attack is nothing new for the region, it's not antivax related at all, they just don't understand the issue with the disease and violently object to outsiders telling them they can't do what they want to. If education can't sort it then Darwin will.

Fairly obvious I’d have thought. People no longer living in slums for a start, better nutrition and general health. The NHS provided backup with GP and use of medication including antibiotics for secondary infections.
TB rates dropped too, helped by drugs like rifampicin and like measles it was another disease almost wiped out by vaccination. Smallpox was a big killer until it was wiped out by vaccination.

If anything, they have more excuse. Western powers haven't exactly acted for the benefit of Africans over the last few hundred years so it is easy for Africans to be led to be suspicious of Western medicine, especially when it clashes with traditional funeral customs.

Theres been rumours out there that the 'aid workers' are not acting wholly with the local interests in mind and are a wedge for some very nefarious foreign interests...
