I’m surprised it has taken so long for any director of a water company face trial/huge fines or sanctions.

Along with other former directors of substantive companies.

Too often it seems easier to just complain without any real action.

I love this bit:

"Southern Water ... said it was a "completely different" company to a decade ago."

Well as the company has stated that then we should believe them and drop all charges. So if I robbed someone 10 years ago, I should be able to argue that I was a completely different person to a decade ago?

Seems entirely believable to me. Most of these big corps have zero morals at all. And this was 10 years ago. In that regard things have got a lot worse.

I assume these individuals received performance related compensation and benefits, therefore the avoidance of fines for southern water would have been of massive financial value to their remuneration.

Not so much the tip of the iceberg as the head of the turtle poking out; these yahoos have been whooping it up on billpayers for decades and telling whoppers about it to the EA about the ste they were pumping into rivers and the sea. Hopefully the first of many such cases.

Prison time please - and for a very, very long time, if guilty.

This is the sort of stuff that the drama series "Dirty Business" was all about. I said at the time that I was surprised there wasnt more media reaction to it.

I think its pretty clear they are guilty. I very much doubt any prison time will be involved though. People at that level have influence.

Is it?

The regulator allowed the concept of no flow days where measurements couldn’t be taken. After having moved monitoring to be conducted by the company alone.

The supplier lifted and shifted the material elsewhere.

I’ld be genuinely interested to know whether that was against the law or just ‘shenanigans’.

I may be wrong (hopefully) but my sense is that they (and no doubt other water companies) gamed a crap system. And nailing them for that will be hard. Because nothing they did was seemingly against the law…
