Jodrell bank facing closure to cut costs
Discussion
Of all the money we waste on crap surely we can find the £2.8million p/a for this?
Jodrell Bank's Lovell telescope faces axe in science cuts, BBC understands - BBC News https://share.google/EXpIPTPpNErtb6LTi
On the radio today that since George Floyd police forces in UK have spent over £600 million on DEI
Millions of £ spent on translation and interpreter services

Well, this particular race to the bottom didn't last long.Jodrell Bank's Lovell telescope faces axe in science cuts, BBC understands - BBC News https://share.google/EXpIPTPpNErtb6LTi

I'd be more interested in what the UKRI is spending its budget on.

Come on, this is PH. Has to surely be the billions on asylum housing.
The policing one is good - except nearly all the money is a sunk cost so the headlines about being 'on DEI' and 'it could pay for extra officers' etc are BS.

On the 'sunk costs' What's to stop it happening again?

I'm not going near the billions wasted on economic migrants/asylum claims as that immediately marks you out as a racist right wing bigot/thug with added DV leanings and breath like savilles corpse

I would. Crazy money being spent.

The police are going to continuously be trained on matters relating to race / diversity. Not least because the police have failed as an institution multiple times on this subject (1999 Macpherson Report, 2023 Baroness Casey Review), and secondly because they have the police everyone in society.
Now is the training appropriate and / or has it gone too far? Those are separate questions.
The author of the report seems to think so, and he may well be right. Though I have to say I question the competence of someone who doesn't realise most of the calculated expenditure isn't available to reallocate and 'fund an additional 2000 police officers'.

Anyway, back to the actual story. This feels terribly shortsighted and in the grand scheme of funding, £3 million is hardly a lot for a foothold on the worlds scientific community "f

I suspect Jodrell Bank is somewhat obsolete?
Tom Scott paid a recent visit, it's part of a worldwide network and is still important.I thought that was kind of surpassed by the multi-site phased array system, part of which is on the Jodrell site it seems.
Its closure has been threatened before, some suggestion of a negotiation tactic, 'give us more money or we'll shut down the iconic thing'.
Hopefully they will find funding elsewhere and it won't actually close.
It's fairly depressing from the article to see that we are also pulling funding from shared projects overseas. That seems damaging too, in a different way. Looks like bad faith if we commit to supporting something in say Chile and then just walk away whistling because you don't fancy it any more, leaving the other partners to solve the problem we have created.

and the east London community (no, the original ones) will have to find a new rhyming slang target word otherwise in a couple of generations they won't know what it comes from as in "im off for a quick Jodrell". Eh? Mortarboard said:

seriously though, it is a very small amount of money in the scheme of things.
