Love a bit of hyperbole in the morning!
I'm mid Essex, just south of Chelmsford surrounded by farms. A week ago we had a massive explosions when a small fire set off a barn full of fertiliser. Over the week since, there's been three significant field fires near us including a friend's farm where he lost 3 and half field's worth of wheat that was due to be harvested this weekend.
I'm not cynical but the little bit that is did make we wonder if a field of low-yield, low quality crop lost to a fire would provide more from insurance than it would if sold but speaking to my friend, that is not the case as no insurance would cover crop loss to that level. At best you recover the cost of seed and labour.
Field fires are not uncommon in the summer but it does seem they are growing in number and scale. I'm surprised there's not been a ban on the sale and use of disposable BBQs - even charcoal for BBQs ... but are they sufficiently problematic to warrant a ban.
So, what to do?
