What the actual fk.

Man, 102, dies after alleged assault in south Wales pub

Can you even imagine making it to 102 and that's the thing that bloody does for you.

The story originally reported seemed a bit light on the detail.

Seems he went up on stage during a live performance to demand the music be quieter, got shoved, fell off (3 steps down), and got the usual injuries for an elderly faller.

It sounds a little bit more complex than the summary originally implied ie. not just some pisshead giving an elderly regular a punch.

Going up on stage to ask a pub band to turn it down is a bit futile, not that it justifies shoving them down some stairs.

Such a shame when somebody who survived WWll, whether at home or served in the forces passes away... especially like this.
No doubt there will be an inquest to determine if it was just a tragic incident... or needs to be investigated further.

If someone is that old you don't touch them FFS. I mean, you should not really be shoving anyone down stairs

A couple of things that complicate it slightly - the guy had dementia, and as some people will know the hard way that can cause behavioural issues.

And at 102 he'll have been fragile.

So it's difficult to be certain right now of who was the instigator, the exact events, and what force was used and how deliberately.

I think people will get a particular initial reaction to '102 year old pub regular dies after assault' (I know I did) and make assumptions but it might not be quite that simple.

If it gets to trial I guess we'll find out.

Cases of being pushed or punched, where the victim has hit their head & susubsquently died.
I watched a case only last night on TV.
A guy was beaten up & a few months later died.
The Coroner had to prove if his beating was the cause of death... in which case it then becomes a Police matter.
Turned out he had a serious coronary disease & alcohol reading of over 300. yikes
He died of massive heart attack whilst smoking a cigarette.

Factor in a frail 102 year old with medical issues. scratchchin

The shove could just well have been a forearm to the chest of someone trying to protect their space - I've seen people with dementia get aggressive unfortunately, and it doesn't seem past the realms of possibility that a defensive forearm could send an old geezer flying.

Ill admit I was disgusted at the title and felt anger until reading

From what I can tell - none of us really knows what happened.

Aside from what happened the the centenarian, one can only hope this brings attention to the root cause of the problem, i.e. music too loud.
Performers, either partially deaf from years of their own music, on the wrong side of the speakers to judge the noise level, or trying to make themselves heard over their own drummer, are left to control the volume of their output. In any other workplace hearing protection would be mandatory, yet the music industry seems to have carte blanche to give us all permanent hearing damage.
In this day and age it should be possible to have decibel meters that can indicate back to whoever is controlling the amps, what the sound levels are around the venue from the speakers' output.

Well that's certainly an opinion...

I visited a pub last month and due to neighbour complaints, they had a decibel meter mounted on a wall...

Ultimately if the action is found to be assault (in any of its forms) and the assault leads to death then manslaughter is on the table no matter how frail the victim is.
