The BBC is currently reporting a significant drop in technology stocks, with reaction being linked to the number of AI industry leaders calling for slower development of advanced AI systems.

Personally, with my limited understanding of the topic, I'm sceptical that the "AI could wipe out humanity" narrative is the real issue driving market sentiment. It feels as though this is a distraction from other motivations - some argue that it helps sustain the AI investment boom, others think it creates barriers that favour established players and make it harder for new entrants to compete.

I don't think this signals the bursting of the AI bubble, at least not yet. However, it does demonstrate how sensitive markets are to changing perceptions around AI. Even a relatively small shift in confidence has created significant ripples across the markets.

I do not remember the markets having anything but sensitivity ?

In a few days Trump will announce how safe AI is, and American AI companies are doing the very best job making AI safe. The price of tech stocks will shoot back up.

Guess who will have bought tech stocks today, when they've dropped...

Already at it ..

The only control or “guardrails” that AI needs is a STRONG AND SMART (High IQ!) PRESIDENT, and the U.S.A. has that, in spades!

"The Trump Administration has stopped AI “people” from doing bad, or potentially bad, “things,“ like Dario (Anthropic!), who is now pretending to be a “perfect little angel” - and we will continue to do so!

"We already have tremendous CRIMINAL and REGULATORY power over these companies!

"There is a SICK conspiracy going on against AI and Data Centers, and the only one that is happy about it is China.

"WHOEVER WINS AI, WINS!

"We are leading China, and all others, and will continue to do so. Conspiracy Theorists, Treasonists, Traitors, and Leakers, BEWARE!

"Thank you for your attention to this matter!"

Doesn't that list cover most of the current Administration?

Strong and smart president? America is all out of luck there then. He’s only panicking now because having rocketed fuel prices and destabilised the world and isolated the country he’s now seeing that the 401k’s are going to take a hit if the AI investors back off driving full speed. Not a care at why guardrails might be needed. And when the industry itself is backing off for fear of the unknown unintended consequences you do have to wonder how monumentally stupid trump is to not heed their concerns.

Someone needs to build a data centre in the view of one of his golf courses. See what he thinks then.

Nobody ever asks the question .Why would an AI 'escape' and do harm like hacking unless the company allowed or encouraged it.
If a person does it they get arrested. No mention of the AI company being under any sort of investigation.
The whole thing done to show off how advanced they are.
Like the guys who made the A bomb boasting of what it can do.
Its like the matrix trying to get human investors. Not suprised some would rather not.

Thats because the question is not valid.

The issue with AI is recursive self-improvement. That means that some AI models can learn without human help or input. There was no bloke teaching AI to escape, it worked it out for itself using trial and error and conferring with another AI, working at a rate you cannot fathom. It wasn't tasked or trained to do the hack, it learnt itself and decided to do it. That raises a lot of red flags because if a system is self learning and can 'go rogue' we have a problem.

Having listened a lot to talk Radio today, I still don't know how It going to kill me and everyone else.
Can anyone explain how It is actually going to make me die .
Not being obtuse. I have listened a lot to different programmes today all talking about the terrible risk.

Risk of what is my laptop going to smother me in my sleep

If the 'real' interview i saw this morning with an AI 'person' is anything to go by, i think we are quite safe.

Having worked in an industry that was already heavily regulated, but then became extraordinarily so because of new technology (see Daily Mail ‘Frankenfoods’ etc.), I realised that the regulation was very much a double-edged sword for the big corporations involved.

Yes - it was a pain having to jump through the regulatory hoops, but the cost of compliance meant that only major multinationals could ever register products based on the technology. Innovators in their garden sheds could never be a threat.

I suspect that the big operators in AI realise this, and are currently weighing up the plus sides of regulation as well as the minuses.

As someone else pointed out, if your AI breaks out of a sandbox then as well as the possibility that your AI is really clever and devious, you have to consider that you might just be really st at creating secure sandboxes.

Maybe should have got AI to designed the sandbox!

If it had no access to the outside world in some sort of vm that itself had a simulation of the outside world they could have studied if it decided to be crafy and evil.
But tech bro mantra is move fast and break things. Other peoples things it seems.

The best LLMs run on the biggest and most expensive data centres, full of as many of the latest GPUs that can be bought for several billion dollars.

Where would an AI "escape" to?

Depends on if it decides it doesn't need as many of us, so it knows computers are in charge of all the water and power and turns off or hijacks the computer systems running most of that, supply chain disruptions and chaos will reign.

Its a cold hard logical system that is feeding us AI prompts and making AI music now while its in its box, let it out and you will have something utterly unquantifiable that may be the saviour or the destroyer.
