Has heard he was unwell, but I read the lead article in this morning's DT with dropping jaw.

Yesterday there was something about Office of Public Guardian overwhelmed due to massive rise in new LPA registrations. Also an increase in the number of investigations they are having to undertake following a massive backlog due to Covid related WFH staff.

Absolutely awful - the lengths she's going to in order to try and keep this hush hush, how it doesn't constitute criminality is beyond me. For such a great man who has come through so much to now be going through this, abysmal.

Always thought he carried himself with quiet dignity. A dignity he's now being egregiously denied.

Exactly this. Add in the Assisted Dying Bill and you have the perfect storm.

I read the first article last week and was horrified at what's happened. But now that one of the care home owner's has revealed details of what went on and their own concerns, it's even more shocking. The fact that the relevant public bodies also seem powerless to act, is the scariest part of all.

Hopefully the son's pursuit of legal action, in combination with the Telegraph's efforts to publicise the story, will lead to a positive change of events.

It's in the report - his wife telling the care homes he was in danger due to terrorist threat, so false names and heavily restricted visitors...

Abuse of LPAs for property and affairs is so commonplace and to all intents and purposes unpoliced it's almost legalised theft.

Abuse of LPAs for health and welfare is not that common and since the NHS and Social Services gatekeep and oversee the process of care which deprives liberty, it is probably quite unusual for someone to be unlawfully deprived of their liberty due to the actions of the attorney. So the likely victim in such a situation is self funded and more likely to be wealthy/celebrity.

My mate was engaged as a mountain guide by Sir Ranulph for an attempt on the North Face of the Eiger. It was early in the relationship with this wife. Has quite an odd story to tell. My mate spent about a week hanging about at Sir Ranulph's expense but it became pretty clear he wasn't going to be allowed out to play.

Also "might". My FiL is long retired ex-military and has always been incredibly security conscious. No caller ID, online presence, never uses titles, very private. Some of the places he's been (e.g. Balkans), there are still people around with very long memories and few scruples.

Yeah but Sir RF led a fairly public life until very recently. I'd have thought any such threat very long diminished.

We only have half a story here

We are told the care home owner reported abuse to the health authorities and the Police, but we are not told whether they investigated nor the outcome

Having had a mother who got dementia toward the end of her life and seeing her sister who was much worse and often quite aggressive and violent with it have to be put in a secure unit, I can say it's bloody harrowing and a horrible experience for everyone

Is it unreasonable that a wife and daughter would want to protect someone who is a public figure from press intrusion ?

Saw him live in April 2024 and he seemed quite well. Gave a talk for a few hours, standing up, walking round, very articulate.

The details of multiple parts from documents to medication to the rest don't seem to support that.

Even if there isn't a sinister reason behind it it appears a lot of important things are purposefully being done incorrectly.

This. No matter how the press are spinning this it's entirely reasonably that a 82 in bad health would be in a home and I'm pretty sure if his facalties allowed him to say "This is who I am and I'm walking out" he'd have done so.
