In an effort to get people to eat healthier foods, Docs' association is discussing a recommendation that the Government introduce VAT on foods with high saturated fat content (biscuits, cakes, snacks and processed meals).

I can just hear it now - "Heard the Budget news?" "Yeah, the chancellor's gone and put another 2p on a bag of chips!"

Why not just impose some sort of healthy ingredients legislation on food producers, and stop the production of all this processed shite in the first place.

Talk about trying to get a dead donkey moving by whipping it.

The modus operandi of this government really does suck.....oh we have a problem-tax it. Don't bother looking at the cause, just tax the effect.

Why doesn't everybody just shut up? Every time a body has a whinge about something, the government look to see if they can "cure" the problem by taxing it.

Nanny state shite..

Even this lot aren't so daft as to do this... it's mad. Last week, fatties and smokers to be denied NHS treatment (turned out not to be the case..) ..

This week, what's in effect being proposed is a tax break on food for vegetarians and various minority religious groups.

When will these twats realise that the more we find new ways to stop people dying, and eve legislate to stop people trading lifespan for enjoyment, the more the NHS, the roads, country as a whole will become overcrowded with old people who are as much use as a chocolate kettle but consume vast amounts of state resource. The only way to offset the number of old people is to push up the birth-rate.

With the currently projected numbers of old people this country will have in 2050, Britain will need a population of something like 100 Million people to be sustainable. We've got about 60% of that number now and the country is on it's knees.

And we need more old people why? It's madness.

I am a doctor, and in my opinion this is a load of crap. What is the point in taxing these sort of foods? I doubt the extra revenue raised would go to the health service to pay to treat obesity related illness.
If I recall VAT was added to "fast foods" some time ago, it certainly hasn't reduced the number of obese people in this country, and the revenue raised certainly hasn't gone on the health service.

Edited to say: CarZee, , and yes I do work in Manchester and no I am not a GP.

I'm doing my best! I can see I've really got my work cut out if I'm gonna get us another 40 Millions people.
I reckon I'll need the NHS then.

If I'm to help the gov't in this cause I'm gonna need viagra on the NHS. In fact I'm going to have to have it shipped in in those huge sacks like the ones Jewsons use for delivering sand and gravel!

Cholesterol is the starting point for the body's synthesis of sex hormones. So maybe those with high blood cholesterol should get a Viagra allowance

As another "Doc", I would also like to point out that it was not my idea!

Tax fatty foods in supermarkets, and only the skinny, self-obsessed wealthy middle classes will buy there - everyone else will go to MacDonalds, because their econonmies of scale will allow them to push the price up just a few pence, and serve millions more with their fatty, sugary garbage. More cash in the burger's pockets. What a clever government we have!!

Get on the phone and tell 'em to stop being such nobs, eh?

Fat tax my ar5e!

Come to think of it, that's not just my opinion - it really will be an indirect tax on my fat bits!

As Carzee said, we've all got to go somehow, and I fail to see that there's any danger of the population dwindling away in the absence of all their PC interventionalsim. I think they must be working some masterplan that relates revenues to population!
