Some nonsense on the news about the new Aquatic Centre at the Olympic Park that has started to spawn.....
Some stupid wavey roof on it apparently, designed by some asian woman...

They then say, costs have soared from an initial £73Million to over £300Million estimate now....

...WTF......and then, said Asian woman pipes up and says (in rather poor English!) "Of course there are many many costs that have come up not associated with the building, such as the interior....."

What sort of licence to print money is this flipping occasion......So she desihms a building and forgets it needs an interior.......or the interior has increased costs by £270Million, 4xplus the original cost...

I'd love to be able to quote ridiculously undeliverable costs in my job, then just charge what i like and blame it on forgetting something that a 3 year old would remember to quote for..
I wonder if the people who lost out on this building design contract but who got their number right (and maybe lost it on cost) could sue the idiots that let this crap happen....?

1st rule of government contracts, lie through your teeth on the bid then claw back masses of cash after.

Rule 2 - dont get caught out with the kickbacks.

Gravy train time, glad its not on my tax bill.

I think the op was perhaps suggesting that she got the job because of her ethnicity, and possibly her sex, and quite likely that it doesn't matter a jot that she has no liquistic empathy with the country that has handed her practice a huge chunk of public money...

Seems like you're the one with the poor English.

It shouldn´t surprise you. To determine the final cost of any publicly-funded infrastructure project, simply take the original estimate and treble it.

Don't forget that doesn't include £61 million for the bridge to get to the centre.

I find it quite stunning that the construction costs rose from £75 million(2004) to £303 million(2008) in four years. Lets hope they come down as quickly now we are in a recession rolleyes

Yes. Because I was unable to remember her name as it was a bit unusual, (so therefore had to say it was "some Asian woman" and her English was poor so it was difficult to follow exactly what she said when she was trying to justify her ridiculous, cynical overspend.

Perhaps if she were intelligent to learn the language of this great nation that she is ripping off, she'd be able to add her numbers up too.

Oh and of course, if she were white people would be more likely to challenge her more strongly, as it was the BB(P)C seemed to just record it and play it and let her off the hook, so as not to be accused of being a racialistist.

I wonder how many property developers there are around who get their budget out that badly.... And stay in business. Good job it's only tax money being spent here eh?

You'd be suprised at how wideely used a tactic this is.

Especially when having to tender for contracts, poeple put in ridiculously low figures to undercut the competition and try win the contract.

Then, once its signed, they use Variations and design amendments to force the costs back up to a reasonable level.

Not honest....not the way we do it......but its definately a tactic widely used in the industry.

Having being peripheraly involved in the construction industry the last couple of years it seems to me that everyone in the chain is at fault. The client, main contractor and architects are all to blame.

What I fail to understand, and I am sure it is me, is that surely when someone quotes a price for something, thats the price....isn't it? I mean if I was having an extension done and the builder said that's £30k sir then at the end of it unless I had changed something then I would expect to have paid £30k and not £60k.

You would have thought that the we would have learnt from the mistakes with the new Wembley stadium.

Proposed cost £175, actual cost £350 million.

What makes me sick is, the Millenium Stadium in Cardiff has a fully closing roof (something Wembley doesn't) was built on time, and on budget, for less than half the price of Wembley

Any chance that the Olympics aren't going to go over budget by about 200% - Err I think not

The more usual tactic is you tender for a contract with a price.

They publicly announce a price a lot lower than what has been tendered for. Then no one picks up on the fact the actual cost is 3 times more.

Was the designer the one who costed this? Unlikely.
