Watching BBC news tonight, President Obama (speaking in Istanbul) 'hoped' to see Turkey become a full member of the European Union- despite those anti Nato protests taking place in the street outside. He said that the US will never be at war with Islam...well, Duh.

So, what do you gardeners think of this?

Sorry, I think I'm a bit lost in this new interpretation of a web site that I used to enjoy..

He should invite them to join the United States rather than tell Europe what to do! smile

I've enjoyed his speeches - not for their oratory but for their freshness, maybe I'm just a sucker but at least it's a change. The only thing that jarred was his proclaiming that the EU needed Turkey and vise versa - I thought this a bit presumptuous to be honest and thought 'don't get carried away'.

Politics aside, I for one am hoping that Turkey put off becoming a fully fledged EU member for as long as possible, purely because I like paying 2.5YTL (£1) for a beer in a bar and 25YTL (£10) for a decent slap up 3 course meal when on holiday. As opposed to 5 Euros or 40 Euros for the same thing in the same place which is what will happen like it has in Spain and across Europe...
The year they drop the Turkish Lira is the year that we start looking further afield for a holiday destination that offers VFM...
