Good to see that Joanna Lumley has finally 'pulled it off' for the Ghurkas.

Looking at the corrupt dross we allow in almost daily it was a crime and a complete tragedy that some of these people were not allowed to stay in the UK.

These people are unofficially the finest fighting force on this planet and we should be proud that they un-questioningly give all for us in the UK.

Those that say 'well I didn't ask them to' kindly back off please?

I signed my sons life away for Queen Country and YOU when he was 16 and 17 years on even he takes his hat off to the Ghurkas.

Apparently they all carry around baccy tins of spices that turn crap army rations into something that takes your head off at the knees. Believe me I have sampled this stuff for myself and it was incredible...

I needed a patio doing and my son and a single Ghurka friend of his shifted 4 tons of material in two days and laid the slabs which have not shifted a millimetre 3 years on (in their holidays of course)

I am proud of the decision this 'failing Government' finally made today, even if it was public pressure that finally made their knees bend...

I would vote for Joanna Lumley as an MP any time she wanted...for moral reasons apart from the fact she's a fine bit of 'thinking mans crumpet'

Mogs
(edit cos I'm a little drunk...)

Not that i have an issue with them coming here, but it was part of their contract that they have no right to live here.
Right or wrong they signed the paperwork.
Still infinetly better than what we let in by default at least they have pride in our country!

They'll never truly have justice until people can spell Gurkha properly

wink

I do agree with the OP's sentiment though. If they're good enough to fight and die for this country, they're good enough to live here. God knows all manner of undesirable seem to be able to just rock up at Customs and claim asylum so it's about time that people who've done something to deserve settlement here got a fair crack of the whip.

Absolutely fabulous, Patsy! thumbup

I was listening to this on the Radio this morning and I shocked myself to find myself shouting at it - some moron politician (Jacqui Smith?) seeming to have forgotten that they didn't want this in the first place, if none of this was public, you'd think that THEY wanted it in the first place and THEY think it's a great idea and THEY think it's a good idea.

I find it so hard to listen to politicians when this happens as they always seem to forget about things like this.

I'm really angry about this so I think I might go and lie down.

This sort of thing:

BBC News said:
Ms Smith told MPs she was "proud to offer this country's welcome to all who have served in the brigade of Gurkhas"
This is hypocrisy on a level that makes me want to get a rifle, head to a tower near Parliament and start shooting.

It's painful to watch isn't it. Hypocrisy on a biblical level.

ETA - From the 'Mash today

NOT IF YOU PAID US, SAY GURKHAS
VICTORIOUS Gurkhas last night said they wouldn't live in Britain if you paid them, insisting they really just wanted to prove a point.
In the wake of the victory, Gurkha chieftan Joanna Lumley was briefly the most popular woman in British history before ruining it all by saying something nice about Gordon Brown.

Brilliant.

Amongst all the hoo-ha I couldn't understand whether the Gov't had reneged on the agreement or whether there was a change of expectations on the part of the Ghurkas.

The people that say 'the Gurkhas signed a contract to go back to nepal after their assignment' I say that the contract extended to people from nepal while recruiting them is completely different and a slap in the face when the same country extends a different contract for the same service to people of other nationalities.

eg. you get a job and find out later all your colleagues except you have free lunch allowance?

It just isnt fair...I am not a military man..but i do know that the Gurkhas will be the first ones to run into a field of mines and come back with recon info for the army waiting to plan an attack!

One in ten of the population of a small Hampshire town is Nepalese after an influx of Gurkhas following the successful campaign waged by Joanna Lumley.

"But it is the number of people arriving that is the problem. When you've got 6,000-9,000 coming to the town it's bound to have an effect on all services, it's quite natural.

And very nice and pleasant people they are too. The men mainly work as security guards and bus drivers - and they are extremely courteous.

I was rather suprised that it was that small a number, no issue at all with having the Nepalese here but I do detest the habit they have of spitting every 30 seconds or so.

Yep, you see a lot of them working security in Hants, and they're good workers. If I was going to live cheek by jowl with a concentrated ethnic minority, I can't think of one I'd have less worries about.

Amazing how the BBC picked on this immigration issue, while normally avoiding talking about it at all.

Can't see them talking about how some of our northern/midland cities are heading for 50% ethnic minority problems.

Well then the crime rate will go down - even the pikeys will steer clear if they know what is good for them....

No. The BBC ran with this midweek. Lots of handwringing interviews with local public bodies buckling under the strain of the extra people.

Like I said, never been a problem before in Beeb Land.
