I've noticed this trait on most forums but it seems particularly prevalent on PH. I spell and punctuate pretty well most of the time, so I do notice obvious errors in posts. Doesn't make them any harder to read/understand in most cases.
Virtually every post like that is littered with sneering replies ripping the p*ss out of a few spelling mistakes. As if it makes someone thick or something.

I've friends who can't spell for toffee, but know their way around the inside of an engine or an operating system a lot better than I ever will.

got a spellchecker, comes up underlined in red, sometimes I can be bothered to correct and sometimes i can not, still it gives the speelling numpties something to get all excited about and show their followers that they have (in their eyes at least) some sort of kudos

I agree but txt spk is another ballgame altogether, very different from poor spelling/bad grammar.

I get annoyed with bad grammar and poorly constructed sentences too. American spellings also annoy me.

But I make mistakes too and I get corrected by the other Spell Checkers on PH - and I don't mind (too much smile).

I get really wound up by unnecessary capitalization.

Have you got a 'SHIFT' key and a full stop too?

If the grammar police cause people to double-check their posts then thats a good thing.

The internet has made each of us an author and publisher and that is great, but where the written word used to be filtered by someone interested in quality, that filter now only exists if we impose a sense of responsibility on the author.

I can't play guitar. I've got two arms so I can literally strum the strings, but I can't make a pleasant noise with it. For that reason I don't wander into crowded rooms and start 'jamming'.

But you are willing to learn how to play right?

I just feel that from your post, you imply that people should not post on PH unless their grammar and spelling is perfect.

I'd be a little gutted if I missed out on some business advice form Sir Richard if I had taken up your attitude.

You can porbbaly raed waht I'm tpynig if you wree to raed tihs qiukcly so waht's the porlbem?

I'm not saying postings should be perfect. I AM saying that the person who wrote it should also be the first to read it - i.e. before they post it.

Some of the bilge that is posted on here is just stream-of-consciousness garbage that reflects very badly on the author.

Yes, I can understand your final sentence, but if your thoughts are worth my attention, isn't your writing worth yours?

Absolutely!

Spelling is not such a big deal to me when I can tell (generally) that it's just fat-fingeredness (I know) because I suffer from that myself, but spelling 'definitely' as 'definately' (for example) says to me that you have not bothered to think about the origin of the word and you probably don't believe that there is any value in being skilled at communicating in your own language. I tend to extrapolate that to a lack of care about learning any skill so comments and opinions re: such things as driving habits or points of law cease to have any impact when expounded by someone who couldn't be bothered to write their thoughts down correctly and coherently.

Also I'd like all PHers to learn the simple rule that you NEVER use an apostrophe for a plural. The amount of posts on here with multiple plurals in a post only some of which have apostrophes is shocking.

E.g. "I like car's bikes and train's but not buses" AAAGHHHHHH!!!!!!!! EF quoting proper, like.
