Very odd. I got the impression that the crowd were there to see something. I wonder if one of his "mates" expected to video something very different.

Sad that the nasty and odious st thought that somehow what he was doing was OK. I am delighted he got his just desserts.

Personally I think the fellow waited far too long before striking. As soon as someone has placed their hands upon your face/head it's time to act.

Exactly, he was wide open to a really strong headbutt at that point. I personally would have considered it game on at that point.

Assault needs no physical contact.

And you are entitled to defend yourself in the event you reasonably believe that physical force will be used against you.

So yes, to my mind, once someone has placed their hand on my head, I would be looking to place him in a wrist-lock.
