Girl loses fingers in art class:

This poor girl, what a tragic accident. The skin must literally have been cooked off her hands.
I have experienced a bit of heat from setting Aradlite, but I've never heard of the dangers of plaster of Paris before.

Am i reading it correctly?
She was told to put her hands in clay... but decided to actually put them into a bucket of plaster, that was setting...
So she got her own hands stuck, through stupidity?

Unfortunately, this will result in more H&S whereby a trained scientist wearing a hazmat uniform will be required in every art class.
Next week look out for boy with no limbs after he jumped in a blender instead of the swimming pool like he was asked to.

Why the payout?
Girl gets injured ignoring teachers instructions.
Also shouldn't they maybe have called the Fire Brigade? Or the CDT department with a saw?
I read it as girl misunderstanding teacher's instructions.Girl gets injured ignoring teachers instructions.

There is no mention of her ignoring them.
If the possible outcome of misunderstanding an instruction is loss of 8 digits, I think there is an issue.
Accidents do happen. And a seemingly harmless plaster of paris incident has been shown to be pretty harmful - I'm not sure the girl should suffer the inevitable disadvantages that she will now contend with.

Making a cast of her hand.
It is pretty bad damage. Are the school to blame? No. Is the teacher to blame? Well as the rest of the students managed it, No.

even if she wasn't told to do it i still feel 100% sorry for her.
we have all messed around at school doing silly things - hell that's not even stupid. I'd probably have done it given half a chance - who was to know that it would burn her. The poor poor girl - more safety needed there. Its not as if she put her head on a bunsen burner etc.
I feel so so sorry for her.
Err, my brother set fire to himself with a Bunsen burner in a chemistry O level!we have all messed around at school doing silly things - hell that's not even stupid. It's a fine, isn't it?BBC said:
The school admitted breaching health and safety rules.
It also admitted failing to report the matter to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), which only found out about what happened from the girl's plastic surgeon.

i'm baffled.
If there was a person being burnt in plaster in front of me, I'd hammer the bugger till it broke and she got her hands out. Which einstein didn't do this?
Or cold running water? I know plastr isn't very conductive, but a heatsink at 15 deg C would have helped, shirly?
The teacher was probably very good at writing essays and doing arty things and maybe not very practical or having much common sense. If there was a person being burnt in plaster in front of me, I'd hammer the bugger till it broke and she got her hands out. Which einstein didn't do this?

orperhaps they were not alerted to teh problem until too late
Maybe they were more worried about injuring the girls hands by removing the plaster so just stood there being indecisive.
perhaps they did everything possible.
Surley the girl must have felt things heating up and long before it got too uncomfortable and too set she could have removed them or at least raised the alarm at that point?
