It doesn't matter who is the most talented, just if you fit the image CMD wants to project.

"Conservative leader David Cameron has said his party could introduce women-only shortlists of election candidates.

He said under-representation of women and ethnic minorities was a "real problem for Parliament and it's been an even greater problem for my party".

He said the party's selection procedure had been altered so that new shortlists would be drawn up between Conservative Central Office and the relevant local association.

Mr Cameron added: "It's my intention, if we continue as we are, that some of those shortlists will be all-women shortlists to help us boost the number of Conservative women MPs."

he added that the introduction of "open primaries" in some constituencies was not enough on its own to achieve greater diversity.

Obviously learned nothing from what happened to Labour in Blaenau Gwent (once considered one of their safest seats), people will not vote for candidates that are forced on them against their will.

Do the voters get to select the candidates anyway?

Don't we just get to vote for whoever is selected by the party? 'Dave' seems to be saying in some cases there will just be no blokes to vote for.

Now we expect this kind of crap from idiots like Harriot Harman! (who shouldn’t be left to run a bath unsupervised!)

I guess it goes to show, it don't matter who you vote for, the government always gets in! Same st different colour!

Suppose it depends on whether any of the male candidates excluded from the list feel aggreived enough to stand as independants. It might make little or no difference, but could end up costing them votes.

As much as we all state we hate government meddling, gender/race quotas, positive discrimination and so on how much does this make you think David Cameron listens to us?
How will a female MP serve me better? What injustice against women is he seeking to redress?
What the monkeys is the point of all this?!!!!! Awwww fk off I can't be bothered.

CMD doesn't learn. Remember the Southall by election? CMD foist his own "ethnic" candidate on the local party, believing that the electorate were stupid enough to vote for someone purely because of the colour of his skin. Unfortunately the candidate CMD believed to be best suited was actually unpopular locally and was rejected by the electorate and finished third. (Labelling the party of Churchill and Thatcher "David Camerons Conservatives" probably didn't help either. wink)

The local party are the best people to judge who the best candidates are, not some suit at central office. CMD should drop this rapidly.

It's just such a monumentally stupid idea. I thought Cameron was smarter than this. Obviously not.

Wosserchops was talking about this on C4 news earlier, arguing that it is bad and demeens women. Made some very concise and valid points.

I reckon this is a mistake.

They are clearly planning on parachuting in central-party female candidates and getting the local Conservative associations to adopt them. I realise all parties do this to get talented people into the House but this will cause friction that the Conservatives just do not need. Let the local associations choose who they want to put forward.

I know this will result in some dull but popular candidates but surely the Conservatives can afford that...

As someone of right wing leanings, already distrusting of the Conservatives on Europe (I remember Major signing Maastricht without a referendu,) I think this will help move my vote away from them.

There really is no point in voting any more.
It doesn't matter who gets in next - nothing will change.

Perhaps if you don't vote, someone like the BNP might get in?
