Anyway, the simple solution is to fly from a regional airport to Paris/Amsterdam/Copenhagen/Frankfurt, and start your long distance flight there. You get to avoid Heathrow too. You will need separate tickets though.
Alternatively, those in Belfast are luckier - a short drive to Dublin, then they can connect wherever they used to fly through anyway.
The biggest losers here will be Heathrow and BA.

Yet another reason not to fly
So given the choice i won't fly as it is economically it is not quite there as well as the added inconvenience for all the anti terror garbage means that Gordon Browns policys means that i won't get on a plane. So my behavior has been changed by government policy which means it has been a success that i won't fly as it would cost me too much. Therefore he has helped to save the planet from nasty CO2 as his policies can't of been anything to do with just raising cash

I fly to Greece twice a year and we have decided that we are driving next year, it will work out cheaper to extend the holiday, have one long trip and make the journey part of the trip, mooch down to italy and get a ferry overnight to Greece. Disclaimer: anyone trying to work out how its cheaper to drive needs to avail themselves of the following facts, the car does about 45 mpg when driven fairly gently, i live in cornwall so normally fly from newquay to Gatwick and then fly to Greece, There are two of us plus baggage, so that is 2 flights to Gatwick and two to Greece, and obviously back again.
Add in Winkys taxes and the Airport develpoment fund we have to pay to Newquay airport for just walking through their departure doors and its not hard to see how its much cheaper to drive/float. We will go from Plymouth to France on the ferry, Ancona to Patras. booked in advance to get cheaper deals, instead of two trip next year we will go for one long trip, maybe 5 or 6 weeks.

Indeed, you'd think that the government would want to encourage business flights since they actually bring money into the country. Flying business class isn't just about lording it over the proles, it's more to do with getting some sleep and being productive.Of course we shouldn't stop people from being able to get to Spain for less than a 20 mile train journey, that'd be crazy...
