FIREFIGHTERS had to demolish part of two South Yorkshire homes last night - to rescue a man who had plunged down his neighbour's chimney.
Fire service managers had to dismantle the chimney to reach the man who had plummeted all the way to the ground level from the roof of the terrace house.
He had lost his footing after clambering onto the rooftop and hurling roof slates, aerials and chimney pots onto the ground below.
The man, aged 35, survived the fall and suffered leg injuries, abrasions and shock.
Fire service managers providing emergency cover while firefighters were on strike last night were called to St John's Avenue, Masborough, Rotherham, by police officers dealing with a man hurling missiles onto the ground below at 8.20pm.
Police had cordoned off the street to avoid pedestrians and motorists getting hurt.
As firefighters arrived they watched as he lost his footing and fell down his neighbour's chimney.
They had to carefully demolish the chimney, brick by brick, on both sides to reach the man.
Incident Commander Neil Hessell said he had never seen an incident like it in more than 27 years as a firefighter.
He said: "We arrived to find a man in his 30s walking along the roof, throwing slates, chimney pots and television aerials onto the street below.
"Around six cars were damaged and there was a significant danger to the public so the street was cordoned off.
"We called for our Technical Rescue Unit and hydraulic platform and those firefighters worked extremely well in partnership with the police and Ambulance services to rescue the man and ensure the safety of the surrounding areas."
Police arrested the man on suspicion of causing criminal damage and he was taken into custody overnight. Structural engineers were called to the scene and confirmed the safety of the buildings.
