I think you'll find this means inter-bank transfers, not the likes of you and me. Actually, it's not a completely mad idea at all.

just got this from a friend that works for a major Bank...

"In theory someone (banks) will have to pay a small 0.1% or 0.01% tax on each and every transaction. Ultimately the Government have to think through who would pay in the end"

Firstly, the government shouldn't have used our money to bail the banks out in the first place.

But, as they have, they should have made it clear from the outset, exactly how and when that money would be paid back.

The sooner these idiots are voted out the better, unfortunately, they'll only be replaced by other idiots, but wearing blue ties.

Well i think the proposal is to tax the transactions that are made by the organisations run by the greedy fats cats, in which case the greedy fat cats will just relocate themselves (and the organisation) to somewhere without the tax regime thus causing further loss of tax revenues and a few jobs in the process.

Yeah right

It will be sold as a tax to get those fat cat bds who have brought the country to this horrible crisis.

In reality it will be on every single transfer of money from one place to another

Think of it as an extra form of VAT

Strikes me as a sensible idea, but it'll be rendered completely useless if it's not adopted by all large banking countries, surely?

Cmon, he went to the summit, proposed that idea, and got shot immediately by the rest of world.

The Ruskies derided it as "another Gordon Brown tax", the French said "don't be stupid", the Germans declined the offer, the Canadians publicly stated that they wanted low taxation - not higher, and the US thought it was such a stupid idea that they sent a Federal Reserve janitor to say it was a daft and unworkable idea because no other high ranking official could even be bothered to comment.
