The fact that it's got everyone's nickers in a twist is because it was the most popular image search for "Michelle Obama", not "Monkey Obama" or "Ape Obama" like the George chimp one above.

Google must have had notification of a missle lock on their HQ.

Ironically this only works if you have the Safe Search option as Moderate, if you leave it off that image isn't there.

People have kicked up a fuss regarding an image as the top result of Google.

People complain of the image being number one and how it is a disgusting image and link to the image to show what they are talking about.

Linking keeps the image relevant and ranks higher in google @ No.1

More people see image and are disgusted and image gains further links.

So, the difference is that one is white and one is black. Treating people differently because of the colour of their skin is the definition of racism. Therefore the clamouring hordes (who no doubt though tthe George Bush version was hilarious) are no less racist than those they decry.

ETA: The CNN frontpage (website) mentions it about halfway down the multiple subjects under "latest news". While a popular web-hit, I have heard no stink on the major networks; it certainly is not dominating the headlines by any means.
