Is anyone like me sick to the back teeth of the coverage on this?

He decided to 'hack' a US Government network. He knew it was wrong and got caught. Fortunately, we live in a democracy and allowed a fair trial. Why not just put an end to this, try him in the hague and serve whatever sentence is passed in the UK should he be found guilty.

There was not that difficult. I mean how much money & time is this costing/consuming both the US & UK governments to agree terms on his arrest. IMO I would just let him off with a slapped wrist. The torment this dude must be going through along with the uncertainty for how many years now is punishment in itself?

Can nobody make a decision these days or what!?!

60 year sentence..

I could rape your wife and daughter, then kill them, and do less time.

Crazy

Another reduction on our debt from WWII no doubt. Surely someone in the US office can see the nonsence of this whole saga.

PS Is he in remand at the moment or a free man?

I throughly dislike the way his lawyers and the UK news media have latched on to his "aspergers" as a way of trying to get him out of trouble.

I read somewhere that he destroyed a number of user accounts and got up to other naughtiness while he had access. Is this true, has anywhere actually reported EXACTLY what the US alledge he did to their network? All I keep reading is that he accessed it to "look for traces of UFOs"

It doesn't take much to make the Yanks look foolish, which is pretty worrying given their World status.

I guess they are pretty pissed because this ordinary guy hacked the best they could put together, but not half as much as I am pissed at the taxpayers money wasted on this farce.

would it not be better put to use hacking the computers of known enemies of the western world rather than being locked up / being bubbas beeach ? or would his illness not allow him to investigate anything other than ufo conspiracies?

he hardly 'hacked' them.

he wrote simple script that tried logging onto dozens of different computers, using the 'default' username / password.

the fact that they effectivly left their front door wide open is no defence for doing it, but the way the media and us government portray him as some kind of 'master hacker' is a bit of a joke.

He committed the crime from the UK, so he should be tried in the UK.

The issue isnt his guilt, its whether our government has any backbone whatsoever..

It seems not.

Do you know I wonder if the systems he got into were a "honeytrap" just to enable the States to take a few hackers out..if you get my gist..?

To add fuel to the tin foil hatted fire, they did use his "hacking" as the basis for increasing their cyber security budgets.

They're lucky a crazy man "Hacked" their network and not someone who wanted to do real damage.

I like how in one of the pdfs they released they blacked out the IP addresses of their servers. But when you copy and pasted them from the PDF they were shown clear as day :P

I want to know where they are getting their figures from. He caused 700k of damage...how?

by accessing a few computers where the users were too dumb to change the password.

Those whose computers they are should be the ones looking for a new job, not a guy who didn't do a great deal

I'm not really a tin foil hat chappie but it was just a thought...not dissimilar to the cars they rig up to catch joyriders...

He magically caused $5000 worth of damage to each machine, which is the trigger level for prosecution. Handy that.

He didn't cause any damage whatsoever.

What he did was highlight that the millions that they'd spent on IT security had been spent on hookers/booze/gambling/guns instead of actual IT security.

Its completely laughable that they left such ridiculous open holes in their security. When I was working at one UK military establishment there was no physical connection to the outside world for e-mail (air gap - everything done via tape between gateway machines, let alone internet access. Sounds like my old colleagues friends in America were just demonstrating their complete and utter incompetence.

Unless my idea of a honeytrap as I posted above is a goer...?

+1

The US sys admins involved should IMHO have been sacked for
gross incompetence.

Ok the US authorities want their pound of flesh, but they
would get more respect in the world if they gave Mr McKinnon
a medal for his most excellent work.

Heaven knows what would have happened if there had been
a bunch of determined and skilled system penetration
experts, instead of a lone, relatively unskilled, individual.

I suppose that's the moot point, where was the crime committed? Is it as straightforward as the fact that he was sitting in the UK mean that's where it was carried out or or will the geographic location of the servers be the deciding point?

off topic but that was actually paid off a few years ago.
