Well done lads.
Took a while for this to come out. Wonder why.

The compo system is all f
ked up.
The guys who lose limbs or their sight seem to get peanuts.
However, during a football match last year I broke somebodies shoulder. To be honest he said it ached a bit but wasn't that bad. It did stop him ten pin bowling though, and he played this up.
He got about 7k. Unbeleivable.
When his cheque turned up i was disgusted.

He kicked me in the face but I didn't claim. Maybe I should have, for 'ruined looks'.
You cannot sue Mother Nature, you fool.

Is the 20 yr old angry that Brown used the visit as a pic op or angry because of the policy that put him in harms way....because he was a little kid when the WTC came down so by the time he joined, danger in the far east was a very likely result of being a solider.
Whats happened to him/them is grim and they should get support but i do wonder if we need to do a better job of explaining to kids whats involved if they shun the government that was in force when they signed up. These are not people that joined under Thatcher and thought the IRA was their biggest issue.
Is compo even discussed with new recruits? Do they understand what they are getting into?

I've often wanted to ask the Army guys I work with just what goes through their head when they sign up. Are there lots of young guys signing up without a real grasp of the potential consequences?
I think some of it may be that any young lad with zero qualifications can join the Army and earn £16k+ with pension and medical. Where else can these young lads earn that sort of money?
As harsh as it may sound, there are plenty of cases out there where soldiers are coming back without limbs and finding that the compensation falls short of what they consider fair, yet there are still plenty of lads joining up, well aware of what may happen. If you join the army well aware of what might happen, and how much money you are entitled to should the worst happen, do these guys really have much of an argument (moral issue aside)? Just being Devil's Advocate!
I think all it highlights is that we (civvies) rely on people in positions of low education/ambition/opportunity and high naivety, to get sucked into the forces so we can send them places to kill people for us.
Clearly, there are many who don't fit this bill (and plenty of Officers with a diferent motivation), but a hell of a lot that do and openly will admit to their option being poverty/crime/join up.
However, maybe this means we should be more supportive, given how we used them?

The system might not be fair in the weighting it gives to various injuries, however the system is there to be used. The payment scales should be readdressed, however if the activity was authorised then he is perfectly entitled to claim.

The claim process does allow comments on how the injury has impaired the individual, however if this isn't backed up by substantial medical evidence, and his line managers comments then the pay out wont be made. However you will know all this already.
