I haven't seen any mention of this yet (gimme an R?) but it seems bad things are brewing in Oz.

I've always like Australia for it's no nonsense, beer swilling, blokey attitude.
It's a real man's country, but there is talk of a National Internet filter to block thousands of websites.

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2009/03/18/aussie_fir...

Already the list of blocked sites has been found/leaked, but it surprises me that Oz of all places wants to try something like that, following in the footsteps of China and North Korea.

Edited to add- it's pretty old news too! no wonder it didn't turn up in a recent search!"

I'm surprised that Big Brother UK hasn't wanted to commendere the telescreens.

The interweb has to be one of the biggest threats to totalitarianism there is.

V Surprised to see the Oz lot are being censored.

I take it they will have a bunch of people on the case like China to shut down proxies, etc.

OK, it seems it was voted against, an almost cancelled, but revived, hence it appearing on my radar today...

I wouldn't worry.

Just use a proxy server outside of the country. Problem solved.

Australia has done some very strange things over the years - one was a large list of banned books, and the list itself was secret.

Doesnt exist any more. Its gone the way of the nanny state where every single little facet of daily life has to have a law / rule / legislation attached to it.

Agreed. Don't anyone be fooled by the matey blokey no-nonsense image. It is one of the most moron-run control freaky nannyish places to live.

We do have the so-called Internet Watch Foundation though.
Similar idea but not quite so up front.

Unfortunately it does just get squandered. Here in WA we are the resources capital yet beyond the over priced property and cashed up bogans you cant see where the money has been used. It vanishes.
