Is it just me, or has this lovely government of ours never in the past shown the slightest interest in preventing anyother large company from falling into the hands of foreign owners.

This is the 2nd or maybe 3rd story I have read recently where they appear to be doing everything they can to stop this Kraft bid.

Local MPs making noise to no effect.

And what's up with the Unite union - a suicide pact with Labour? Excellent.

I think there is also some irony here. As I understand it (from a brief precis on the wireless this morning) Kraft would be looking to keep the Cadbury factory in Bristol - whereas Cadbury are in the process of closing it and moving production somewhere in Eastern Europe. So... if this was an accurate take on the situation, this takeover would actually protect British jobs.

it's called corporatism - failed politics from the 60s and 70s.

I know we all like a bit of labour bashing but the Conservative candidate for the constituency that covers Bournville is calling for action to block the take over.

Politicians for Labour and the Conservatives think pretty much alike.

I'd be interested to know just how clued up the reader ship of the FT are. A hell of a lot of copies are given away.

Perhaps their meddling would have been better put to use in attempting to keep the various utility companies, JLR etc. in UK ownership.

Their ties are the only way of telling them apart, and even Tone (peace be upon him) wore a blue tie to confuse things.

Just like the Terry's factory in York was kept open by Kraft.... Oh hang on!!!!!!!!

Typical of British Banks. In Germany it would be considered Treason to fund a foreign buyout of a successful German Company.

Is this a "damned if you do damned if you don't" one?

I don't believe the Government should be involved in day to day bank decisions, but on the other hand AIUI there are a st load of people in the Bourneville area who will be out of work should Kraft decide they only really want the name and not the people/production plant?

Call me nostalgic but I thought Cadbury's were one of the few "old fashioned" British companies that are doing nicely due to making a product people want, and making it well?
