Dunno if this should be here or in the business section.

So...in 2008 Blackpool Pleasure Beach makes £4M profit.
It then introduces a controversial £5 entry charge. This gets you nothing, just entry into the Pleasure Beach, something thats been free for 100 years.
In 2009 they make a £4M loss.

It's the recession you know.
Nothing to do with the new charge. Ooooo no.

So bloody typical of Britains businesses/polititians etc.

LaLaLa we know best.

Not quite correct, released figures are for year finishing April 2009, they only introduced the admission fee at the beginning of last season, so around March/April last year.

I suppose they were thinking about all those grandparents and the like who wander around and don't go on the rides, yet make the place look crowded.

Problem is the oldies spend money on the slots, and buy stuff from the cafe type places, ice cream stands and the like, and maybe go on the gentle stuff like the old fashoined roundabout etc even if not the big thrill rides.

So they don't go in, the place then looks empty, and people think, "Empty, must be crap."

That's a helluva turnround even in a recession year. Mind you it was the Mystic Met Office BBQ summer so maybe that's their excuse.

I would imagine it's because all the dole scroungers, immigrants and criminals that populate Blackpool have worked out that £5 is 5 pints down at Weatherspoons.

well it sounds a valid point in theory it depends on if they sold anything in 2008, how their accounts are calculated and various other points rather than just the £5 entry fee.
does anyone know more in depth detail ?
The previous years £4m profit was boosted by sales of assets, possibly stuff related to the park in Southport?

The only link I've seen is The Times http://business.timesonline.co.uk/tol/business/ind...

Will be interesting to see the figures for the past year (when the £5 fee was in operation), as a lot of places in Blackpool reported a good season, some weekends were very busy.

Since when did these amateurs start closing at 6pm yikes

I was going to bob up tomorrow and use some free wristbands to scare the living daylights out of the kids biglaugh

Looking on the bright side i can be away from the s**thole before we have to eat any of the c**p food the whole "resort" has to offer vomit.

Are they trying to save on the "leccy" not having the lights on later and lower staff costs ?

You could tell they were going to start charging years ago when they started "sealing" all the entry and exit points off the trialled a £2 charge in southport.

Did anyone ever see the programme a few years ago with the Wannabee bigmouth "show director" who probably runs the place all they ever seemed to do was shout

An aquaintance who worked there a few years ago told me they were ******* up the place royally, seems like he was right looking at them figures smile

the park opening times vary during the year - short opening hours this early in the season, sometimes not opening till mid day - then they'll be open 9am till 10pm during the high season.

  • Wannabee bigmouth "show director" who probably runs the place
that would be Amanda Thompson. Yes, after the death of her Father Geoffry and Grandmother Doris, she took over the running of the place (and shut down Southport pretty sharpist too)

I had a root about last night and supposedly even september they shut at 8 yikes , i suppose it helps sorting out some of the "p**shead" element later on.

I just wanted to be vague for "libel" reasons just in case biglaugh , the older generation seemed to be ok, but i was under the impression when they opened the place about a 100 years ago they laid some clause out to the council that no one else could have rides etc south of the south pier or something (but it was a long time ago redface

I know what your saying about Southport but lord street wasn't too bad biglaugh

I see no one even managed to come up with somewhere decent to eat biglaugh

Yes,

I wouldn't spend £8 to go in Southport, but if i went in i would have spend quadruple that.

I wouldn't pay a £5 to just go in, a bag of candy floss probably costs that now furious

I remember when it used to be open till about 10pm. I was shocked when I drove past last year to see it shut at about 8.30pm. The promenade was still teeming with visitors. Seems utterly mental.

West Coast is good for steak although it's gone downhill a little these days.

Not sure on the rides south of the pier, but I believe the Pleasure Beach don't need planning permission, although they have to be be careful over ride heights etc due to close proximity of the airport.

It used to open past midnight at weekends. You could go into my back garden down near the airport entrance and hear the lift chains from the Big One, people screaming etc. But at that time as you were paying for each ride they needed to stay open to earn money. Now they have your money as you buy the wrist band, so no need to stay open late.

8pm during the high season does seem to be very early. Alton Towers latest is 7pm during July/August and 9pm the last couple of weeks in October. Thorpe Park seems to be about 8pm and then 10pm for the last couple of weeks.
