So, it seems draconian new anti-binge drinking laws will effectively outlaw the yard of ale, for shame. This British icon has been around for hundreds of years, however due to New Labour will now be consigned to the history books.

I love the draconian stance that we will fine or jail pub / club vicencees for some offers .. but won't touch the super market bulk buys.

It's just unbelieveable frown

Code of Practice.

How can that be enforced in law?

"Pubs and clubs will have to provide free tap water to customers"

Most pubs already do, if you ask them nicely. Not in clubs though - will make a nice change.

It's mad - no one forces you to drink (apart from the fellow pub goers). wink

Don't worry, the focus on supermarket bulk buy is coming soon.

Was reading a proposal from the Govt to force the breweries to charge a minimum price per unit of alcohol - the long and short of this means that the average 6-pack will cost in the region of £6-£7.

THe best bit was that if the breweries make too much money from this new proposed scheme of higher charges, the Government are going to levy charges on their profit.

You couldn't make it up - make someone charge more for their product, get more in tax that way and then take the profit the company makes too.

I really, really detest this Goverment.

Oh well, I suppose I'll just have to bring a load of red and white Kronenborg back with me whenever I go to France then.

Every club I have ever been in has offered free tap water.

Most I have been in recently don't. Bit crap if you are designated driver & have had your fill of fizzies.

ETA I think it does depend on the type of club & what recreational substances people enjoy in them.

We'll all be on alcohol rations soon rolleyes

The real problem is not the cheap drink, its the mentallity of the people that abuse it, the problem is already there, the alcohol just adds to the effect.

As usual the Govt seeks to punish the masses.

Why should we be told what to drink and not drink just to stem the stupidity of a few?

Its silly... those benefit sponges who go out and get drunk and then violent will still do so even if it costs them more... its not their money in the first place so why should they care??!??

Because that's how Labour's philosophy works - legislate for the lowest common denominator.

Your ETA may be correct, Id guess the management would rather hand out free water than have a load of dehydrated pillheads flaking out.

I remember all this being talked about (almost word for word) about 10 years back when I was in to going for big nights out!

To be honest though after traveling through a lot of places around the world the English and the Aussies are the worst for not being able to control themselves around alcohol...unfortunately its another case of the terminally stupid needing protecting from themselves.

I understand from a friend I was talking to at the weekend that the cost of these has soared in recent years to though.

They won't do this.

They will merely alter the duty and reclassify drinks they want to discourage as being taxed like spirits (i.e. per unit of pure alcohol in the product). They the government will get the money. Which is what they want.
