Coded references to New Testament Bible passages about Jesus Christ are inscribed on high-powered rifle sights provided to the U.S. military by a Michigan company, an ABC News investigation has found.

The sights are used by U.S. troops in Iraq and Afghanistan and in the training of Iraqi and Afghan soldiers. The maker of the sights, Trijicon, has a $660 million multi-year contract to provide up to 800,000 sights to the Marine Corps, and additional contracts to provide sights to the U.S. Army.

U.S. military rules specifically prohibit the proselytizing of any religion in Iraq or Afghanistan and were drawn up in order to prevent criticism that the U.S. was embarked on a religious "Crusade" in its war against al Qaeda and Iraqi insurgents.

It's nothing new. They have been doing it for 30 years, so it's completely unrelated to Iraq/Afghanistan.

True, but the people who live there won't see it that way.

I thought the most interesting part was about just how much the US spends on it's military - $660 million for just gun sights alone. That must be about what we run the RAF on for a year ?!

What a spasticated story... how the fk would any Afgani' or Iraqi have any fking clue what that means.

Thats even if they did bother to read the serial numbers on their sights, are the jounalists in these stories on crack or something?

I have a Trijicon TA31RCO-M150CP. As long as it does it's job, it can be pink with "gay liberation" printed on the side. I don't care...

Tempest in a teacup. The "offending" inscription is noted above...

It could just as easily have a non-biblical meaning. The ACOG is one of the best sights going. I doubt the "inscriptions" will keep any terrorists from using them if they find them on the battlefield. Same thing is probably true for US supplied forces (Iraq, etc)

if the taliban are close enough to read the s/n of your sight then their too bloody close!

its a bit random anyway, i mean if you look hard enough you would probably find it means something else to another religion.

The supplying company might feel this is acceptable. The U.S. Military should deem it 'not so'.

The UK is a Christian country on paper, but I would not be happy for our guns to reference the Bible...

I like the fact a devout Christian (rip) ran the company..

I can imagine the conversion with the arms distributors..

I agree completely, but we must remember that Christians have previously invaded their territory and taken it for themselves. It may have been hundreds of years ago, but they won't have forgotten.

"I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life." Is the quote.I'm sure if I use that as my text to a C of E congregation and mentioned the context there's be a few raised eyebrows!

Who really gives a fk. I mean, really, it only has a biblical reference to those who read the bible - else it is just seemingly random letters, numbers and a colon.

What a waste of column inches.

True; however; the ones with the bacon-scented lens caps could be a touchy issue.

True, but those that do remember that are likely so old as to not be a large bother.

Bloody hell.
Bloody hell? Is that because you didn't actually know that? Bloody hell indeed!

I'm not saying I agree, just how it may be perceived. It doesn't make life any easier for those out there if their opponents believe they are fighting a religious war. The idea is to make it as easy and as safe as possible for our troops, and having references to religious text on their weapons cannot benefit their efforts.
