"BAE Developing National Strategy"

That will have the UAVs flying around with small bags of cement powder instead of sensors for the first five years of deployment (which will be 15 years late starting anyway).

Will be a complete nightmare...

Airspace is very very busy over the UK most of the time... granted its controled over cities etc, keeping a drone sepperated from other traffic and safe should it fail is going to be a nightmare and will be the stumbling block for this thing...

Even the Predator drones in Afghanistan get into airpoxes with manned aircraft because they are not where they should be....(the drones, not the manned aircraft).....

Can just see the news... Light aircraft collides with AWOL drone...

I suspect these ones will be the size of toy planes/ remote control aircraft you can buy off the shelf not the big predator sized ones. The fire brigades have been playing with them to look for hot spots for a while and I suspect these will be similar.

If it means having one of these instead of a hulking great noisy helicopter at 3AM hovering near my street, good.

Funny isn't it?

Sunday: Series 8 of 24 begins, features CTU keeping an eye on New York via drones in the sky

Friday: Five days later, announcement that police to use drones to keep watch on cities

You have to wonder if someone in the government went into work on Monday morning and said "I have this brilliant idea...."

The USA had problems recently when Taliban went to RadioShack Kabul Online wink and bought cheap kit that allowed them to intercept the (unencrypted) images and messages from drones, so over here it'll only be a matter of time before some kissed off IT geek has one ploughing into Plod HQ - or elsewhere.
