Of course they are, and you can get into foreign Nightclubs, and everyfink! Great for travel too instead of needing your passport - but you'll still need your passport too.
Only £30 to you Guv'nor!
WTF?
Argh!

This is nothing but yet another political spin on a pathetically stupid idea. I have already submitted a complaint on another piece of BBC spin about the number of cards in circulation:

What's the difference between losing a passport and losing an ID card on a night out? You're screwed either way.
I guess young people are possibly more likely to take up the ID card and once you've got one you'll never be able to get rid of it. So ingratiate them with society at a younger age. Next they'll say they stave off paedophiles.

I dont get it.... Most people already have two "ID" cards.... Passport and driving license...
Why... WHY do we need a third...other than so the gbbermuent can create another non department...
If you must, add more data to the passports/driving license.... might be a bit cheaper...
But until you can justify this garbage.... go away!!

The cards, costing £30, could be used in place of a passport by 16 to 24-year-olds while travelling in Europe.
Young people still need to carry their passports for travel but the cards could be used as proof of age in areas such as retail outlets.
What an awful piece of journalism. What exactly does it mean...?Young people still need to carry their passports for travel but the cards could be used as proof of age in areas such as retail outlets.

I think the Gov want people to have a form of identity that can (and later MUST) be carried on your person. It will make their job of snooping and taxing us easier.Why... WHY do we need a third...other than so the gbbermuent can create another non department...

However the current forms of ID don't meet their needs because:
- Passport is too big to go in a wallet so people don't carry them.
- Driving license, well not everyone drives.
Hence the 'need' for a new form of ID which you can (and later MUST) carry with you and to which a whole load of new privacy invading rights can be attached.

I think you are correct. Then they can utilise a single central "safe" database and gradually include all records, DNA, finances, etc, etc until they just move on the the barcode tatoo.

Oh, it's worse than that. It was originally supposed to be a single clean database, but they could do that. So now it's an amalgam of 3 existing, very dirty databases, which are known to be full of errors.Boils my piss.
Twunts can't even do facism properly.
"...Home Office Minister Meg Hillier said the £30 cost for the card was a "pretty good deal..."
WTF. A 'good deal' for something they don't need but which the government insists they do?
How low will this government sink, trying to get the young and more naive on board with their control freaky plan. Baastards.

Unless something is done, within our lifetimes we are going to see these repellent pieces of plastic totally compulsory, it will go something like this..
1. Not compulsory to have but '..its a good idea people, stops terrorists and peados dontcha know..'
2 within a couple of years it will be compulsory to have but not to carry. Although the police will stop you and sk to see it, telling you you should really carry it with you ('for your own security sir'). Your details will then be entered on a data base of 'non card carriers' (basically we'll be seen as potential terrorists)
3. Still not compulsory to carry at all times but you need it to use your GP or when undergoing medical treatment. No card? No medical treatment. (stops illegals abusing the system guv)
4. Roughly 5 years after that they will be compulsory to carry at all times on pain of a large fine.
5. This followed shortly after by requirment to present the card for your card MOT and the number of your card entered in the database. Other uses like this will follow regularly.
During all this, the propaganda will be along the lines of 'you must have something to hide if you don't want one' and 'only terrorists wouldn't want one' this will be pushed most fervently to schoolchildren in the classroom and in advertising (a bit like those hatefull climate change ads are aimed at kids)
It's time to WAKE UP people and do something, otherwise we are staring a very bleak reality right in the face. We've all seen the propaganda on the BBC with people being interviewed on the streets saying that they'd feel safer if they had ID cards, the sheeple will accept it and any protests will be drowned out by their bleating if nothing is done.
(I can knock out tin foil hats by the dozen if any of you don't have one)

Get an ID card because it is cheaper than a passport; and
If you lose the ID card it is easier to replace than the passport.
Surely this means all the non-European illegals will get hold of the ID card and hence be able to travel Europe, live in the UK etc unhindered. Its hardly going to be the hardest thing to fake is it.
And what a blatant clumsy way to start the implementation of the ID on a compulsory all-encompassing basis....
First it was voluntary for the young people.
When the young (read non-politically active or interested) people adopted it, the oldies were coerced into adopting it by being told to keep up with the times and by the excuse that with so many people holding it, it made sense to make it compulsory.
