Average speed cameras could be used on all motorways
Under the guise of cutting carbon emissions as well.

The idea of installing "time over distance" cameras on all motorways was condemned by Claire Armstrong, who runs the campaign group, Safespeed.
"For any organisation to call for any car behaviours to be altered in favour of unproven carbon emissions shows what a total shambles Road Safety has reached in this Country. The arguments are unproven," she said. "Are we to now be expected to offset road safety, against someone's misunderstood concept of Global Weather Patterns ? If so this would be a travesty."
Decrying both Global Warming and Speeding in the same sentence?"For any organisation to call for any car behaviours to be altered in favour of unproven carbon emissions shows what a total shambles Road Safety has reached in this Country. The arguments are unproven," she said. "Are we to now be expected to offset road safety, against someone's misunderstood concept of Global Weather Patterns ? If so this would be a travesty."
Brave girl!

Sounds like a fishing trip, rather than reality. It would be a remarkable waste of time and money
to put speed cameras on all the UK's safest roads.
The Tories have promised to change the 70 mph limit
to an 80 mph - a far more realistic proposal.
Oh how I look forward to visiting the UK with a European registered car. As the article points out, as well as being mentioned on here several times over, speeding fines have decreased due o the average speed cameras. The system shoots itself in the foot so how can it ever pay for itself?
Do those temporary average speed cameras on motorways actually work? I've always been a bit suspicious they're just psychological.
How do they read numberplates at night?
It's not unusual to see the cameras at funny angles pointing all over the place.
I saw one on the M25 the other day where the flexible conduit was hanging down (implying there were no cables in it).
I've never heard of anyone being caught by them (anecdotal - I know).
Are there any issues with prosectuting someone for travelling at a vague average speed (vague because the cameras have no idea if you've changed lanes and therefore what real distance you've actually travelled).
Why aren't there any lines painted on the road like other cameras?
I've seen a proper permenant installation (on the way to Canvey Island) and that looks very real but the motorway ones...hmm...I'm not so sure. Not unsure enough to test it out though!

I note the part where they say that they want to fit some 'Intelligent Speed Monitoring' or somethingorother device to goverment cars to avoid a repeat of the incident where Jack Straw's car was caught doing 103mph.
So, let me get this right. You're openly admitting that all govermental vehicles won't be able to go any faster than 70mph when fitted with these devices? They'll probably have one of those stickers on the back and everything.
I can just hear Al Qaeda or whoever chuckling away to themselves as they buy a Nissan Sunny, fit it with explosives, and as they manicaly work the poor Nissan up to 71mph, grin as they look sideways at the Foreign Minister sat in his speed limited Jag as they hit the button.
Honestly, these fools are so deluded it's unbelievable.

I'd vote Al Qaeda if they did that Honestly, these fools are so deluded it's unbelievable.

Infra red illuminators mounted either side of the camera.
They can catch you at 80+mph hurtling down the M6 in the worst of visibility by using infra-red, digitally enhanced photography yet when some little scrote smashes into your car they can't do anything about it.
Now that's progress... Oh wait...

2 - How can infrared be used to read a numberplate? Do the characters on a numberplate have a different infrared reflectiveness to the rest of the plate?
2 - Presumably so.
This article suggests that it is easier to extract images from an IR image even during daylight because by keeping a constant level of IR illumination and filtering out visible wavelengths you don't have to deal with changing light levels.

you are brave, admitting you have been there on a public forum.mind you so have i, and the chance of getting to the speed limit would be a nice to have

essex cc and plod have both said they would never put speed cameras on national speed limit roads so how will that work. i would like to think we the public would have enough gumption to stand up and say no to yet another erosion of a freedom (and i am not meaning speeding) but the notion we can just get away from it all, but i suspect we will just bend over and take it.
