Well I might as well give up now then
How many more excuses are going to come out now!

Incredible non-story. Of course some genes aren't great for aerobic exercise? Down's syndrome perhaps? Dwarfism? Dicky joints? Underdeveloped lungs?
Doesn't even cite the study team or university that carried out the research, probably because they're not even wanting to be associated with it.

I found that article very hard to read to work out what it was they did and discovered. As far as I understand they decided that some people after taking up cycling for an undetermined period some peoples ability to absorb oxygen barely changed and somehow oxygen absorbtion correlates to life expectancy.
So what if external factors to your genetic life expectancy came into play like cake addiction? Surely obesity would make it more likely that this would lessen the chances for you to reach your genetic expiry date? in that case going to the gym and shedding the pounds would increase your life.
All that is assuming the reaserch is sound and people put in the effort and did it regularly so they would see an increase in fitness.
The article in main seemed like another excuse for some people to not put the effort in.

Isn't this just a rather fancy way of putting what we all know already another way...
Everyone knows somebody who is naturally fit or naturally strong, whenever you do anything there is someobdy who is naturally gifted. Some people are unfitter than others regardless of whether they train. Just like when for example in running one person could do exactly the same training as someone else but just not be as good...its just life!

Stupidest is not correct grammar. He should have said most stupid.
I never understand why people get so wound up about this kind of story. Why is it so difficult to believe that genetics have an effect on how your body functions?

By peering into the volunteers' DNA they found 30 genes that affect oxygen uptake and showed that differences in 11 of these genes closely correlated with changes in aerobic fitness after cycling.
Around one in five of those tested had a combination of genes that meant their oxygen uptake hardly changed, despite weeks of fast pedalling.
It sounds like perfectly sensible research to me. The effect of genes on the mechanisms of the body is still a relatively new area of study.Around one in five of those tested had a combination of genes that meant their oxygen uptake hardly changed, despite weeks of fast pedalling.

Yes, sorry everybody I foolishly used slang grammar on pistonheads.
I'm off to give myself 12 lashes in lieu of this.

Whilst it would be hard to argue that anyone world class did not in part have their genes to thank for allowing them to be world class, it would therefore seem reasonable that everyone is governed by their genes to reach a given level of performance. That may be world class athelete or running 5k in 40mins. However that is not what the article seems to sell. It does not say work hard and you can be better, it says some people can work as hard as they want and they will still struggle to reach the remote control. The new mantra of the mail reader could soon be "I'm fat so I must be one of those people with them bad genes. There is no way playing COD and a sarah lee diet is the reason. I am a geneticly preprogrammed sloth, can't fight nature why try."if so could you please explain to me why the vast majority of olympic runners look like this
