What's Great about Britain?
Discussion
Right then, as a balance to the many doom and gloom threads on the state of everything, I thought I'd balance this by throwing out a challenge to see what's good about Britain, the World and life in general.
It's a beautiful day here in the South East, the 2010 F1 season is looking like being a cracker. There's more people able to make us laugh more often and harder on telly these days. We've got the Olympics (which will be great!).
Over to you (pictures welcome!)

Oi! stop stealing my ideas!

So, it would seem the answer is lots of things

The countryside - this green and pleasant land - which is green and pleasant because of our temperate weather.
Innovation - we're great at this as evidenced by the number of small and niche engineering/technology/specialist firms we have.
Clubs and societies - as a nation of "hobbyists", whatever you're into you can usually find like-minded people near you to enjoy it with.
Sport - we punch way above our weight in many global sports.
Self-deprecation - no need to shout about it, we know we're Great.

Gordon Brown, poor roads, tax, immigration, pikeys, council estates, speed cameras and vans.
It we did not have the above we would have nothing to moan about.
Seriously,
We have wonderful countryside
Good old english pubs
Lots to tradition (royal family)
Our engineering history is something to be very proud of
There are lots of good things about britian but they sadly get forgotten about

Spend a load of time in Western Australia and then come back.
It's not called the green and pleasant land for nothing. It's a cracking place, despite the people trying their best to run it into the ground.
Having been all over the world, there are very few places that have such a variety of scenery, history, architechture, cultures, oddities. There is no place like Britain.
Hence why I will bomb the houses of parliment before they force me to leave.

I agree about WA although I loved the place - for a fortnight. Margaret River and the Margaret River ales are beautiful and the people a delight. But compare the country around Wave Rock - dry, parched, arid, and essentially dead, with (say) the Chiltern Hills in spring. The British Isles are superb; everywhere has its negatives but there are so many positives that the bad bits are overwhelmed. It's not called the green and pleasant land for nothing. The sense of history and substance one feels while in Britain is unique.
The fact that much of the modern western world came about because of Britian is important.
That the world's largest empire was ruled from a reatively tiny island is impressive, no matter how embarassed that makes some Brits.
The fact that a relatively few fresh and priveldged Brit pilots, flying very few planes stopped the massive, well equipped, well trained Luftwaffe from touching down on their terms is the stuff my greneration was raised on and inspired by.
The never-thought-about-quitting attitude that brought the average Brit through WWII is something I will forever admire.
Friends that can be counted on.
My XJS!
I hope you all find a way to keep it all up.
