...and the neighbour who posted it gets an £80 fine. Probably a reflex reaction here, but, out of curiosity- could you successfully take such a person as this to court for loss of earnings/emotional trauma compensation? £80 doesn't really cut it for me, I'd be wanting their house burned to the ground and their children in sack cloth & ashes for six generations.

The fine is a criminal conviction - for loss of earnings etc the 'paedo' needs to go to civil court.

Jeez, so now he has told the police I imagine he's had a warning "If anything happens to Mr Accuser, we will be on you like a ton of bricks".

So, nothing will happen and now he's incriminated himself for anything that happens to matey.

Considering that whole businss Demon Internet had years ago where they were responsible for comments posted about a Doctor on their Newsgroups I'm surprised Facebook allow this sort of thing. It's surprising they haven't seen more legal action given some of the crap that they host.

It is not enough in my opinion. If my life was ended in this way? I would make sure hers was as well. Nasty piece or work.shoot

yes

A relentless pursuit of her every last penny through the courts for the remainder of her days as a minimum.

Hopefully a nervous breakdown, loss of sanity and a lonely death in a mental institution as a nice result.

Defamation of character is pretty serious.

Has she got any money to pay? Presumably this is a product of modern Britain on benefits...

Of course, the benefits can't be touched, human rights and all

Libel, the internet counts as written media.

And as above, given the Demon situation (I don't know if the law has changed in this since I did it at Uni) then the person in question could also sue Facebook for the same. I rather think they will have the money.

Doesnt that apply only to sites hosted in the UK though? I think US sites dont have legal responsibility for this sort of user generated content, unless they have been advised that it is factualy incorrect.

Delving into the online libel laws makes PH's name and shame rules make an awful lot of sense
