Apparantly they don't get paid as much when they're on holiday as they do when they are working.

http://uk.reuters.com/article/idUKTRE61N0122010022...

"At present a BA pilot on holiday will take home less pay than if he or she was working -- something unheard of in other businesses and industries," BALPA's general secretary Jim McAuslan said.

For the average pilot BALPA reckons this is worth £600 for 4 weeks.

Is some of the allowances that they're missing out because they're not flying (food for example) or is there more to it than that?

As I'm not an airline pilot, then I couldn't give a fudging monkey's what their "plight" is - they chose the career, they signed the contract, so now they can just STFU.

Any BA pilots on PH want to comment on this?

I would have thought that pilots would be slightly better educated and hopefully more intelligent than the trolly dollies.

Obviously not, seems they all want a P45.

Isn't this the same as other industries with a 'shift allowance'?

Also - is an extra 600 quid per annum really going to make a huge addition to a pilot's salary?! rolleyes

Is it that they get paid less for holidays, or that they get extra flying pay?

Poor loves, better drop their working salary to match their holiday salary then. That'll solve the argument.

I reckon they get an airtime bonues and away from home pay which they're trying to argue should be paid on holiday as if they''re always flying.

This is what it sounded like to me. Absurd if this is the basis of the argument.

So they are!

"The pilots' union Balpa, says that Working Time Regulations set out how holiday pay should be calculated - as an average of the last 12 weeks' pay.

But those regulations do not apply to the airline industry, which is covered by the Civil Aviation Working Time Regulations. The union argues these don't specify how holiday pay should be calculated."

Surely there's no case to answer if the quoted text above is correct.

As someone who would have loved to become an airline pilot (decided on a different indusrty) the prats that work and fly for BA should realsie that there is a whole host of people out there ready to jump into their shoes.
Being an airline pilot today may not be what it use to be but neither are a lot of jobs. So please stop moaning and get on with what your paid or you may not have a airline to sue, Also remeber there are people out there who will do the job for free if needs be.

Sadly I fear that BA will not be around much longer.

Do they get paid when they have to stay somewhere when their flying time is up? Would they be forced to stay somwhere warm & sunny, in a hotel (do the trolley dollys have the same perks?) do the pilot's families ever join them on holiday the enforced rest period?

Really? Seems unlikely.

Too right!

Anyone who disputes anything wants a P45!

You don't really know what you are talking about do you?

BA pilots like the engineers have already taken a pay cut and many have taken unpaid leave to help BA.

True. Would you believe that there are currently people paying to be pilots

People are paying for the training to become qualified as pilots but as far as I know there aren't any qualified U.K. pilots ( BA or otherwise) working for free or paying to fly for an airline.

I was on about the timing of bringing this issue up at the same time as strike action.

The more damage you do to a company that offers a service means people will go for the service elsewhere.
