Pub landlord given first smoking ban jail sentence

Whilst I agree that the law is the law, I think this one is a farce.

Nick Hogan, I raise a glass to you and light a Marlboro in your honour.

Being jailed for repeatedly refusing to pay his fines and court costs is not quite the same as being jailed for flouting the ban.

The law may be an ass but by refusing to pay he only has himself to blame and left the Judge with no option.

Whilst I can't stand the smell of cigarette smoke, I can't help wondering if the smoking ban help Britain into recession.

I suspect perhaps he was refusing to pay his fines on a matter of principle in that he thought the fines unjust.

Maybe he should have mugged an old lady instead. That way he'd have got a bit of community service.

Not sure about that, I'm a smoker but completely understand that it is a disgusting smelly habit. I much prefer pubs that smell of piss, BO and farts.

Personally i think it could have been handled better.

We went from small no smoking areas to a complete ban. Why not go to small smoking areas?

I was in Dublin last year and their smoking areas are superb. Usually fabric covered on all sides plus the roof, massive heaters. Busier than the non smoking bar areas.

It just smacks a bit of double standards, paying £4 a pack in tax but being made to feel like a second class citizen for the privilege.

I'm an ex-smoker and I hate the very stink of the things, however, I'm a bigger fan of freedom.

It you want to kill yourself, then go ahead, it's not like it isn't a huge payday for them.

Indeed I am a part time smoker and I am just wondering if they reduce smokers to 10%, then where will the money come from to pay for the NHS.

Release burglars but jail smokers and speeders...

Is that a New Labour Slogan?

Easy, they will raise the tax on petrol or alcohol.

I have already quit drinking in anticipation of the next round of personal freedom attacks and hopefully will also be running an LPG car soon.

All the taxes i save will be used for my 'escape this socialist sthole fund' hehe

If someone won't abide by a Court order, they deserve to have their punishment escalated. It's another one of those PCoJ kind of situations- it's not the original offence that's important, it's obeyance of the Justice system.

So, if they decided there should be a £1000 fine for walking on the cracks in the pavement, you would be fine with being sent to jail for not having £1000 as that is the law.

Sometimes law are wrong you know. This man is in jail and has hurt nobody and cost society nothing.

Whether you like it or not pubs have been devastated by the smoking ban. So many have shut down in our area it's ridiculous. I find it so sad to see boarded up buildings covered in graffiti now standing neglected and ruined.

I say good on this guy trying to save his business and not just lying down taking the st this controlling and overpowering government dish out, this country needs more people like this.

Whether you are a smoker or not we all suffer as pub by pub slowly closes and shuts it's doors for the last time. Yes there are many other factors that cause pubs to close, but in all my short years I've never seen so many close in such a short period of time. A brain dead cabbage should be able to put two and two together.

Little by little drip drip drip, one day the general public will wake up,turn around and realise what they have finally lost.

I think the smoking ban in pubs was one of the only good things this government has done!

Why would the government introduce such a law?

You are aware that the courts give people plenty of time to pay their fine, in installments if necessary? You are also aware that fines are set relative to income?

If somebody has no intention of complying with a court order, they should be prepared for the consequences.

I don't know why they would introduce a law like that, buit then i don't know why they introduced a smoking ban in private pubs and clubs. They don't always make sense.

Yes i am aware you would have time to pay the £1000 fine for walking on the cracks, and you would be happy with that?
