Sending the wrong message IMO. The slimy guttersnipes should be taking a pay cut to reflect the seriousness of the state of the economy. Not leeching more cash from the public coffers. The public sector unions will no doubt use this as justification for why their members should get pay rises.

But surely they'd all earn much more in the private sector.

It seems a little cheeky to be taking a payrise when the rest of the public sector are having pay freezes.

Making up for the fact that they haven't had a proper pay rise for the best part of 20 years?

Headlines all focussed on it being over £1000 rather than the less impressive sounding sub inflationary 1.5% that would cause many of those that are agrieved by this to go on strike.

Didn't they get 2.3% last year...?

How much have they fiddled for the last 20 years?

Like most of the public sector?

I can't find any historical data, but I'm pretty sure they get regular rises. Certainly, when I worked for the NHS their rises were substantially better than our below inflation insults (Can you tell why I left?biggrin)

It seems incredibly tactless given the size of the deficit and other pay freezes.

Do they deserve more than double the national average wage?

No fking wonder people feel completely detached from the political process, getting paid £65,000 a year for doing fk all and not requiring any specific qualifications or set of skills is a joke.

Is it really politically expedient to award it now? if they waited 20 years they can surely wait till they've earned it by getting us out of this economic mess. Saying they haven't had one in 20 years suggests to me they haven't done anything to merit a rise.....it's how my company works anyway.

I won't have a problem with this payrise...so long as the number of MP's is reduced.

So the basic wage of the MP is £65,737 now with the payrise and they on average £147,000 for expenses and could be in line for £10,000 in compensation for reform of their discredited second homes allowance.

therefore the minimum a back bencher gets is:

£222737 per year.

And they are claiming that the bankers are bad, at least they earn profit to pay for these parasites...

so they get taxed on £65,737 which means take home is £45,095.23, do they get taxed on expenses?

Or is the other £157k tax free?

The way I see it most people are suffering pay freezes, cuts or redundancies. This makes any pay discussion politically sensitive. As politicians you would hope they would be aware of that particular ramification.

This is coming after blaming bankers and trying to ban all bonuses and half of the MP's being caught with their hands in the till over expense claims. A pay rise smacks of hipocracy.

Personally I think The basic for an MP seems pretty low. However their ineptitude in deciding it was a good idea to change now when public opinion is so low is so mind bendingly daft it beggars belif. It smacks of one rule for us idealism and seems like another signal towards the scorche earth policies that no one wants to win the next election.

It's not when you consider everything else is paid for. It's akin to really getting well into 6 figures *in real terms*. biggrin
