Part of me thinks, easy money for the government, the other part wonders why people were ignoring the roadworks and reduced speed signs?

Maybe a better way of encouraging drivers to slow down past road-workers would be to have the US system of double fines when workers present.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/cumbria/8559670...

Road safety bosses say they are stunned after a speed camera caught out more than 5,500 motorists in five weeks.
The camera, on the M6 near Carlisle, was installed to protect workers carrying out repairs and is expected to net £168,000 from fines issued so far.
A Cumbria Safety Cameras spokesman said he could not understand why so many drivers are ignoring the 50mph limit, which is clearly signposted.

I thought the fine was £80?? Not to mention the contribution towards the victim fund!

Number of people that overtake me when Im driving through the average speed sections amazes me!! They must have been asleep when the teacher said..."Lets talk about the word AVERAGE!" It isnt a difficult concept to understand surely??

The american bit is when workmen are present isnt it? It is a bit frustrating when no contra-flow, not even limited lane size, no workers...but yet still a 50 zone! Maybe people would have more respect for the roadworks if a) there was more than 3 people working, and all of them actually doing more than just looking down a hole b) the work is done quickly rather than taking 6 months and c) they only had the limits whilst people are working.

The IPCC seem to make a good effort of misunderstanding / changing the rules of "average" so maybe those overtaking you work for them hehe

In the grand scheme of things they don't make much money at all.

They don't cut down accidents either.

I am yet to see the point of them really, other than to give some people a few jobs.

I Wonder how many of those caught were actually snapped when the workforce was there?
