It's the other insinuations and accusations that terrify me!

This is an accusation of the endemic institutional bentness of an entire council and the Labour Party in the Glasgow area as a whole. It's saying that the entire organisation is institutionally corrupt and to fix it the thing would need to be torn down and rebuilt from the ground up.

Never in my life have I heard it suggested that an entire organisation is corrupt. Individuals, yes! DFepartmental cultures, yes! Whole institutions?

Wow. Just, wow.

I'm struggling a bit with the connection to Brown. He's not and never has been, AFAIK anyway, connected with the Glaswegian Labour Party machine. He's a Fifer born and bred, and an MP for Dunfermline if memory serves me right. For you Sassenach types, that's on the other side of Scotland. East coast. Glasgow is west coast.

Did you read the link?

'It is on Clydeside, where both Gordon Brown and Michael Martin, the mendacious Prime Minister and equally mendacious ex-Speaker, acquired their safe seats, voted into power by a collection of gangsters, hoodlums, drug barons, religious fanatics, and professional criminals who would have felt at home in Al Capone’s Chicago.

AFAIK Brown was born in Glasgow, but got his seat in Fife. However the influence of the Glasgow Labour Mafia extends throughout Scotch Labour.

I did read the link thanks. The only seat that Winky has held, AFAIK, is Dunfermline East. Which is not on Clydeside. It's on the other side of Scotland.

YOu should read up on the Metropolitan Borough of Doncaster (aka Donnygate). Or London Borough of Tower Hamlets (and the lovely Lutfur Rahman)?

Brown wasn't born in Glasgow, he was born in Giffnock nearby but not part of Scotland's second city. He was brought up in Fife as his father was a clergyman and they lived in a manse in Kirkcaldy and he has only represented the Dunfermline seat in the House of Commons.

Ok. I still suspect that Brown got his leg up in Labour during the time he worked in Glasgow. This was just before he got the seat in Dunfermline.

I think he got his leg up whilst at Edinburgh University as he was politically active there and served as Rector. He was already standing for parliament before he headed to Glasgow. Glasgow has always been a hotbed of Socialism and even Communism raised it head in it's industrial areas. The thing is though that all politicians have had to get a leg up whether it be due to cronyism, money or even ,as Labour's all female selection lists show, sex. Politics is a very murky, dirty game and sadly no-one enters it now to serve the public.

I wouldn't associate Brown with the Weegie Mafia either. He eventually got his Dunfermline seat through the patronage of the TGWU (Jack Jones et al). Most of the East Coast Labour MPs/Councilors are Alistair Darling/David Begg types who have to fight off one, two or all of the Tories, Lib Dems and the SNP. The Glasgow party, on the other hand, are absolutely rotten through and through, with their safe seats ('I'll vote Labour because my father voted for them and so did my grandfather'). The Labour dividend for all this is a male life expectency of 54 and hundreds of thousands on the dole.

yes

No need to intimidate anyone to get the Labour vote out in Glasgow.

It's not really news that the Glasgow Labour Party is as bent as a nine bob note.

Nothing BENT about the Clydebank 13, social reformers, communist to boot, they would be appalled at the supposed socialist party today.

Edinburgh Labour is sufficiently embattled to keep it faintly honest, even whilst providing a nest for vipers like Begg, but in much of Fife the Labour Party is as entrenched, if not quite as smelly, as the one in Glasgow...

Definitely 2 different parties. The Labour party could put a haggis up for election in Glasgow, Lanarkshire & much of Ayrshire and it would probably be elected. Glasgow East was a shock for them (and a relief for me, I live in the seat!) but TBH, I suspect we'll see our SNP MP replaced by a screaming harridan (think Harman without the charm or morals) that's about to be pushed out of Holyrood thanks to boundary changes.
The Tories attempted to gerrymander a couple of seats away from Labour in the mid-late 90s by re-drawing the boundaries to create winnable seats. Unfortunately it didn't work, so we've got a Lib Dem in the leafy bit of Dunbartonshire and Scottish Secretary Jim Murphy in the previously Tory bit of East Renfrewshire (council created to give the Tories a chance of getting a council, currently NOC, with 7 Tories & 7 Labour)

Edinburgh, as Fluffnik says is a different kettle of fish - different social makeup, more competition with the Tories & the SNP, council is now Lib Dem/SNP thanks to proportional voting. Fife I'm not so sure about - Gordo got a shock a couple of years ago when a by-election gave him a Lib-Dem for a neighbouring MP and North East Fife (St. Andrews etc) has always been more Lib Dem (Menzies Campbell is the MP), south Fife where Brown is would probably tend to be more Labour leaning - it's more industrial, though a lot of people seem to use it as a dormitory for jobs in Edinburgh. Brown managed to win a by-election in Glenrothes in 2008, so it's still a stronghold, though the neighbouring Edinburgh & north Fife areas might keep Labour in check here.

Basically the big problem with Glasgow is that it's the epicentre of Labour's powerbase, so there's very little pressure from the other parties in surrounding areas - in areas where their power is less concentrated, the excesses seem to be a lot less marked.

God knows what'll happen in the election, but I strongly suspect Glasgow will be all red again (sadly)

I suspect you are right. One of the reasons I'm quite pro SNP is that I see them as being the only people who have a realistic chance in the medium to long term of making a dent in the Labour hegemony in Scotland. I can't see the Tories or the LibDems making any inroads (or having any sort of appeal) to the average punter who lives in Castlemilk or Easterhouse. But, as you say, it probably isn't going to happen this time round.

Pedantic point. You have Scotch Whisky, Pies and Eggs. It's the Scottish Labour Party.
