"A compulsory levy should be introduced to fund a universal social care system for adults in England, Labour says.

It said the move would represent the biggest shake-up in the welfare state since the creation of the NHS and end the "cruel lottery" currently in place.

But ministers refused to be drawn on how much people should pay, saying a commission would be set up to look at that if they won the election.

Such a charge is opposed by the Tories, who have dubbed it a death tax.

The subject is now likely to become a key issue during the election campaign."

I've been arguing with the oldies on the over 50s thread about the cost of keeping them in werthers originals and now this. When are we as a country going to realise when run huge deficits and can't afford all this welfare!!!

Come on Dr Foster, where's the bloody cash coming from?

You can bet your life that those with no money won't be paying, and those of us with jobs will have to pay for them.

Hang on a cotton pickin' minute! I was told at school that my future NI contributions were to pay for my pension, health and old age (or does the latter still mean pension...)
Are they now telling me that this was a little fib, and my NI contributions for the last 25 years amount to diddly squat for me?

It's a difficult one. We have a LOT of older people in the country, all of whom are expensive to look after.

BUT, all the taxes that those people have paid over their lifetimes, taxes which they were promised would fund their care in older age, have been wasted by the current administration. As the old saying does, 'the trouble with socialists is that sooner or later they run out of other people's money'.

Problem comes when there aren't the young people coming into the workforce to pay the taxes to care for the current older generation. Youth unemployment is massive, and the odds of many of them getting into work at any time in their lives is tiny. Hence they become a burden on the already over-burdened system ...

Throw into the mix a few hideously expensive government IT projects, a vast Euro tax bill, a rapidly-crumbling infrastructure, and bingo - Welcome to Great Britain.

Sounds like Labour are trying even harder to appeal to the dregs of society.

How can they get away with plans like this and the free PC's for people on benefits when it seems quite clearly to be a way of buying votes?

Yes.

You will have to hand over your house when you die in order to pay for people who have never worked in their lives.

I don't mind paying for the old war heroes but I'm fecked if I am funding the hippies from the 60s who sat around smoking weed all day.

Having said that with no one to leave my properties to I'm gonna sell up at 60 and piss it up the wall.

Same here.

I am going to die penniless, having had an awesome time.

You know, I’m tempted to move my company and tax contributions back to Italy, despite paying another 25% over and above what I pay in the UK.
The thought that our private sector tax revenue contributions are in some way being wasted by paying people that spout bile and contribute zilch to the ever dwindling economy revolts me to the core.

They have a large commons majority. And the population of this country is atbest apathetic and at worst grovellingly supine.

Most people haven't cottoned on to the fact that National 'Insurance' is nothing of the sort. It is a giant ponzi scheme. The income from new payers is used to fund the outgoings to existing ones, and just like a ponzi scheme it works when the number of new people paying in is constantly increasing (like when you have a population boom), but falls horribly flat when the income falls off a lot (like when that population boom reaches retirement age - rather like it is about to do over the next 10-20 years).

Calling it National Insurance was nothing more than a political slight of hand for introducing a second income tax.

I think we should have the cheaper options - rather than an indefinite stay in a car home smelling of wee, we get a weekend at a good hotel, a couple of hookers, and some ever-so-slightly tainted cocaine.
