The Government says that from April 2010, anyone buying a new car which sits in tax band M (thereby boasting a high CO2 g/km rating above 255) will pay £950, instead of the current £405, for a 12-month tax disc.
And that will affect cars like the Vauxhall Insignia!

Seems like Labour know that they are going to loose the coming election so they are resorting to slash and burn tactics...

First year only, I believe, which is normally factored into the OTR price.

Excellent idea - we can then spend the money generated on wind turbines which run at ~ 7% efficiency. Well done the enviruses

Crazy!

Should the Tories win, I wonder if they will reverse this for more sensible car tax bands?

Yes but these things are announced so far in advance these days that people tend to forget...

Yes. Except that it kicks in tomorrow.

Just before an election.

If you need to spend £405 to re-tax your car in April you aren't going to feel particularly pleased with the incumbent government.

If you want these tax-hiking, money-grabbing bds out? You have got to go and vote. And vote for the candidate most likely to oust Labour in your constituency.

Save the planet through taxes - that will work then.

Exactly where does this extra tax go then? Wind turbines? Alternative energy sources? Research into saving energy, resources or other noble causes?

Or does it just disappear into a big black hole, never to be seen again while it pays for the likes of Brown and Blears to swan around in government supplied V8 Jags (well they were last time I looked!).

Do you really have to ask?

I'm just glad I taxed mine last month, makes the £405 I paid sound cheap!

I think it's it's only for new cars and the first year so unless you bought your car last month you wouldn't have been affected.

I wonder where the line is, that once reached, the populi simply say "fk you, we're not paying" a la poll tax.

Even if the concept is that it is a one-off payment for brand new cars, it still amounts to nothing less than robbery. Plain and simple.

At least Dick Turpin wore a fcensoreding mask ranting

Ah - it remains a very reasonable £435 per year for my car.

I wonder what it was in 1997? £70 seems about right

My mate buys his cars in France. DOesn pay road tax, keeps it french registered. It is LHD with french plates on, but he's happy to live with that.

Never, ever gets bothered by the UK authorities or their taxation
