I can't recall the last major decision this country has undertaken that has allowed us to have a democratic vote on it. Was thinking about it this morning whilst listening to LBC.

So what still makes this country a democracy?

You get to put a cross in a box once every five years or so. Good innit?

It does seem as though the UK is on the brink....

We're not a democracy, most of our laws are instigated by lobby groups and voted on by MPs who have to vote or lose the whip.

Remeber the people protesting about Iraq or 1m people signing the downing street ID petition?

We have an elected dictatorship.

Even that's not really democracy as it's only a few people in marginal constituencies that decide it..

I had hoped that my sarcasm was clear. 'Representative democracy', particularly with the strong influence of political parties, is neither representative nor democratic.

I view it a bit like the hypocracy of the Liberal Democrats, who are neither advocating liberalism or democracy!

Liberalism can either be individual liberalism or collective liberalism. Collective liberalism is the same as socialism for all intents and purposes.

Democracy. Well, that's something about getting a government who act in the interests of as much of population as much as possible!

Sounds great, doesn't it! Instead, we have a load of people who know best doing what they think is best for us. That's our version of democracy.

Rather than acting in the interest of our population, they have a warped sense of what a community is. They then positively discriminate their policies to serve this mirage.

That's how I see it.

We have a socialist government dictating know-best to a eutopian community, whilst also turning a blind eye to human nature and economics.

The problem is that it's getting worse, they are getting bigger and acting in a way which is contrary to democracy. Not just ignoring it, but going against it.

There is a pinch point down this road somewhere and it isn't nice. It probably involves people acting outside the law and then as a reaction, having tougher police/penalties/fines/etc.

It's a totalitarian dictatorship at total odds with the real community.

It is getting increasingly difficult to pretend they aren't really there, which is the British way.

I doubt that that's true.

Probably not far wrong, for the minority which aren't instigated by the EU.
And many of those lobby groups are funded by the government to lobby it for the policies it wants to make anyway.
We are a long way from anything resembling a democracy.

No worries, sarcasm is probably the hardest nuance to convey in pure text.

There are different types of democracy, we are in a representative democracy system. If you want a say on issues you need a direct democracy.

Clearly those in power have no interest in changing the system, and as they say change will only come through the barrel of a gun.

Real democracy doesn't work. Most people are uneducated morons who don't understand the implications of the ideas they hold.

Any thread on PH titled "This is what I'd do if I became PM" is proof of this.

That's why it's best to have a set amount of well educated people making our decisions under the guise of a democracy.

Unfortunately at the moment we have set amount of morons who don't understand the implications of the ideas they hold making the decisions under the guise of democracy.

Worst of both worlds.

At the moment people don't feel they are responsible for the decisions their 'representatives make', change the system and people will at least understand where the responsibility for policy comes from.

Perfectly accurate. I wouldn't trust 95% of people I know to decide on 'the big issues'.

Is that so? I'd say a lot of the right wing libertarian waste negation that is spouted on here is not only feasible, but totally sensible.

Does it clash with your ideology?

Some people on here want to hang, draw and quarter people. Failing that they want to put have a massive rocket and fire people into space.

The UK likes to put itself on a moral high horse (and in many cases rightly so) but posters on here want to have some kind of barbaric justice system with mob-rule.

I suppose some sort of justice system would suffice...

I think you've just given a perfect example, but not the one you hoped to. wink
