I'm hearing a lot of fellow working class people spurting the usual Sun says stuff "I'm sick of Browns broken britain and will be voting for change!" and intending to vote Conservative.

Scary stuff really as for all the hot air the Conservatives are still the party of the middle class. The problem as I see it is that a lot of people these days have forgotten they are working class. To me the benchmark/cutoff point of true middle class is private education. If you received it or are providing it for your offspring (or in the case of PH you spend an equivalent amount on cars) then you are middle class.

I don't think living in a suburban semi these days makes you middle class. The bar for the working classes has been raised considerably rather than the middle class expanding.

Discuss?

If anyone is thick enough to vote by class, their voting rights should be removed.

So in theory, if you're working class (if it even truly exists anymore) you should vote labour even if they are totally incompetent. And vice versa? Good plan, that's a brilliant way to get the most suitable party elected. Now we just need to ensure that the best party always happens to be the one with the biggest population demographic.

I grew up on a rough council estate, left school at 16 and went on a YTS scheme. Am I working class? But then, I got a commission in the armed forces..does that make me a toff?

I vote on the basis of who offers the most to the country (or more realistically, which is the least worst option)

Well the choice this time around is who's going to be hurt most to clear the defecit. The working classes can pay it (Conservative vote) or everyone can pay for it (Labour vote)

We'll ignore the fact that the middle classes created the problem in the first place wink

Surely the only classes now are working class and non-working class. It seems in the interest of the latter to vote Labour. The true working class wouldn't vote labour.

Of course the non working class is another one thats come and slotted in underneath the working class. The hardcore non working classes probably cant be arsed to go to the polling stations anyway.

I was privately educated for four years before my parents split up. I spent the rest of my schooling life in public school.

Am I middle class or working class? Or am I both and therefore vote for any party I feel like voting for?

So they have a good education and that makes them "Twats"? Great logic there.rolleyes

I sometimes think we really do get the government we deserve. So many people decide who to vote for on the basis of anything but the local and party policies - why not try engaging brains and THINKING about the choice rather than following some inverted-snobbery imaginary class lines.

State school educated here, then Cambridge Uni, and now work for myself - does that make me Upper, Middle or Working class in the archaic minds of some?

You have been tainted by private education. You are a dirty toff and your voting card will only have one option on it. wink

Well, I now work in the 'Public Sector' and having been shafted by Brown for the last 13 years, hell would have to freeze over and a nice cherry put on top before myself or any of my colleagues would vote for the lying, incompetent idiot!

I would suggest you research Labours plans for the country. They have a new slogan, which mirrors their 1997 jingle! 'Things can only get worse' (and people like you are the reason the country is so screwed)
