What would you do (policy?)
Discussion
ok, it cant be easy running this Country, although the people that do... do get nice hotels, the best call-girls, duck houses on expences etc. But what would help do you think? - without being too aggressive...
Mine is...I would get rid of the BBC, let them stand alone, let them make their own money.
Why do we have to pay £100+ a year for the air-waves fee. I've had a moan at them, thats what it's for, it doesn't matter if you don't watch the BBC, if you receive a signal....you have to pay.
So....get rid of the licence fee, and every house in the UK has to pay a fee of? lets say £20, every house!! old, new and being built (part of the planning charges), none of this....I dont "av a telly"..."mines black & white". There-by freeing up £100+ to every household that bothers to pay in the first place, not a lot I know, but it all helps!
Let the BBC get some help off the Goverment - NOT US - for the first couple of years, then they are on their own.
I'm sure your posts will alter (might) my view......is there a patent on receiving radio waves?

well to answer the original question i'd make finance (from credit cards and mortgages to stocks, bonds, banking and taxation) a compulsory gcse subject instead of french or art or some other worthless shite

I would cut taxes right back.... and pay for it by huge cuts in public spending... the cuts would come in the form of scrapping all the botched and wasted projects and initiatives. Cutting pointless public sector jobs (see guardian job section for examples of people earning big bucks for pointless non jobs)... I would slash benefits and end continued lifestyle funding to the 'can't work, wont work' brigade... & instead of importing cheap Labour I would utilise the sleeping workforce we already have in this country who until now have been busy doing sweet FA while the state pays them to be 'in search of employment'

Cutting taxes increases the revenue collected, something this Government doesn't understand. I'd agree public spending needs cutting though.Marlow11 said:

£100 is pennies to the vast majority and I think it's an absolutely bargain for what the BBC provides (assuming you can trawl through the crap to get to the decent stuff.Mine is...I would get rid of the BBC, let them stand alone, let them make their own money.

BUT - I don't like the fact that we don't have a choice about paying it. Surely once we are all digital, it wouldn't be impossible for people to opt out of the license fee and, as a result, not receive anything from the BBC?
If this were possible, I'd imagine the number of people that would actually do this to be tiny. Especially when they realise they're missing out on EastEnders. (I realise we can get anything you want from the interweb, but how many housewives will boot up the PC 4 times a week and watch an illegal download of EE rather than stump up £14 a month or whatever it is?)
