Labour use NHS database to canvas / scare cancer patients
Discussion
Just when we'd all thought that labour couldn’t stoop any lower than they have over the past 13 years.................
Labour have been sending out leaflets to cancer patients, the leaflet tells them that under a conservative government their lives could be put at risk.
The truly disturbing part of this is that it’s not just a mail shot, but the leaflets are addressed to individuals, who have had / are having treatment for cancer!

Wonder if any of PH’s labour supporters will be able to defend such despicable behaviour?
When my GP gave me the option of opting out of my details being on the NHS central database, he was confused as to why I wouldn’t want to be on it and dismissed my concern as being a tad paranoid, looks like Martin now owes me an apology!

The stats being that 1 in 3 will contract some form of cancer in their lives, and 1 in 5 will die of it, the chances of current cancer sufferers being included in the targeting for a random mailshot is high.
Not quite so random: "Experian, the data management company, confirmed that both Labour and the Conservatives use its Mosaic database, which divides voters into 67 groups. The databases can use anonymised hospital statistics, including postcodes and the diagnoses of patients, to identify the likely addresses of those with particular illnesses."

A morally corrupt party.
My mum was 60 when she died in September 2007. She had ovarian cancer. Despite going to her GP many times over a period of several years with the symptoms, by the time she was diagnosed it was too late. It was only when she suffered a pulmonary embolism that she was taken seriously and the cancer then discovered.
It wasn't the cancer that killed her though. One of the more unpleasant facets of her illness was that her lungs continually filled with fluid after the cancer started to spread. She was basically continually drowning. As a result, once a week she had to go to the hospital and have a pipe stuck into her lungs through her side to drain the fluid. I used to go and sit with her while this was happening and the pain was unbearable.
The unit at the Royal United Hospital, Bath where this was done was, and still is, an antiquated crap hole nailed on to the side of the building. A man had died of Legionella after taking a shower there a few months earlier. She would often have to stay there for up to a few days on end as her condition worsened. Oh, and they stopped giving the patients there proper meals, just dog-eared sandwiches at the time. I used to cook her food when she was staying there and take it in and try to persuade her to eat it. Oh, and I used to have to pay to park my car at the hospital whenever I went to go and see her and on several occasions when her condition suddenly worsened and I dashed to her, I was fined for not getting a parking ticket. Fined for trying to get to my mum before she died. It cost me something like £300 in parking charges and fines to see my mum die in squalor.
Mum died because the last time she went to have this treatment she picked up an infection from the pipe when it was stuck in her lungs. She went downhill shockingly quickly. I got a call one night to say that she was in terrible pain and was being rushed in. My dad took her into A&E and she was passing in and out of consciousness in a chair in the A&E waiting room for an hour before somebody saw her.
She insisted on dying at home, so we took her home and she died in her own bed a week later.
All this happened not in 1907, but in 2007, after Brown told us that he had spent our billions on transforming cancer care and the NHS.
Now we read that he is mailshotting cancer patients to tell them that Conservatives will kill them.
I hope he rots in hell.

My Grandfather died in similar circumstances, he was suffering from lung, liver and pancreatic (sp) cancer, in the end he opted to stay at home, the hospital were about to use a manky needle to give him some injection and when i questioned it they said that it was beyond its sterile usage date (or something equal to that) but they hadnt had a delivery becuase the firm was owed money by the local NHS trust. It wasn't the cancer that killed her though. it was at this point he asked me and my mum to take him home, his gp gave him wonderful treatment and attended the house every night, even at one point making him a brew and sitting chatting to him until we arrived, he explained that his pay had been frozen, and whilst he wasnt exactly skint, he earned way less than gp's in other areas, this was down to the local labour run local goverment, he despised them, and hearing him and my Grandfather discussing Gordon Brown 7 years ago saying he would be the ruin of the country was something you thought of as a housewifes tale.
not so, eh.
the sooner the moron gets booted out of downing street and sent to the tower, the better.

I work in the area of data modelling and targeting, and suggest that the mailing list used consists of nothing more sinister than the publically available Electoral Roll containing names and addresses of registered voters, which has been tagged with one of 67 Mosaic classifications - the evil 'database' referred to above.
The 67 Mosaic classifications are derived from data such as Land registry property values, council tax valuations, Electoral Roll data such as household composition and length of tenure, at Postcode level. It's conceivable that area level NHS trust data on ill-health and mortality might be included since Mosaic is increasingly used for the planning of health service provision.
However, regardless of what data feeds the Mosaic classification, the data tag is at Postcode level. One Postcode typically contains 15 households, which will all be tagged with the same Mosaic classification. That's not the same thing as having specific knowledge about individuals.
Edited to add that I still think it's a s
t marketing campaign, regardless.Edited by Mobile Chicane on Sunday 11th April 13:49

Personally I hope they have as it gives more ammo to the case for restricting government intrusion into our privacy.
Imagine what you could do linking out from the 47 proposed pieces of info in an ID card!
Thanks, but no thanks.

They know someone in the postcode incode has suffered and that the letter will get to the specific individuals they have targeted - only it will cost them 15x the postage.Cannot see your point?

The suggestion was made in The Times article that individuals were being targeted on the basis of specific knowledge about them. Not so.
They know that at least one person in an incode had cancer and they targeted the whole incode to get the letter where they wanted, how is that not targeting on the basis of specific knowledge? That's assuming they did not just send the letter out to individuals.
