If you were taxed as a couple you'd only get one tax free bit (which may or more likely may not be larger than what you get now) you'd also be pay more in whatever higher tax braket you fall into.

Yep, and the working families/child tax credits are calculated taking into account the taxable benefit of my company car and fuel allowance that I have already paid tax on once!

To clarfy - they add the taxable benefit onto my salary, and then call that total figure my salary, thus reducing the tax credits we can receive.

Many people are finding as they lose their jobs in this recession that even if they have paid NI all their lives there basically isn't a safety net if your partner is still in work.

What will £64 a week buy these days?

Because the job seekers allowance rules are ste, 6months at £64 a week all it does is authorise any redundancy cover you took out assuming you bought any. Surely a better system would pay a higher rate say 80% of earnings upto £1000 a month for six months giving you a chance to sort out your finances before the benefits ended.

How about no benefits but lower taxes so people could make their own arrangements with needing the state.

Agreed

This is supposed to be an "insurance" scheme after all.
