Plane Crash near Andover - witnessed (sort of)
Discussion
OMFG!!!!
Out walking the dog this afternoon north of Andover with the missus and daughter, I heard a light plane flying over and turned to see it, pointing it out to the wife and child -"WOW - must be the only plane flying around here today!" - Perfect blue sky, only thing int the sky 360 degrees all round.
30 seconds later we see a huge plum of black smoke over a village in the near distance - about 1km away. There are soon sirens, and as we walk on, the Thruxton based Air ambulance comes over (a short hop of no more than a kilometer or so from Thruxton).
Within a couple of minutes the smoke abates and a few minutes later the copter takes off to go back to Thruxton - I'm assuming no injuries as it doesnt head of towards the local hospitals.
Now I've just heard that the plane we saw crashed and two people died.
Thinking back, I seem to rememeber the engine note seemed 'lazy'. Didnt hear the impact itself though.

You may want to leave your details with the AAIB : 01252 512299
Your observations may have no relevance, but might possibly have some bearing on the investigation.
While it's still reasonably fresh in your mind, try to write down exactly where you were, what you saw, and what you heard - and probably best to avoid reading any other reports of the accident until you do so.
Sadly, it seems that the onset of good weather in the Spring does give rise to an annual spike in the GA accident rate, but that still doesn't make it any less tragic when these things happen.

Hi Guys,
My father was the passenger on the plane and thank you for your thoughts. I do hope that anybody who witnessed it is not too deeply troubled. My father was an incredible man and one with strong Christian heart and it is with that we accept his going with relative peace.
I just want to ask that you please contact Andrew Blackie at AAIB with any witness information. We know there were technical problems and things like the engine note being off would all be very usefull to us whilst we piece together what happened to help future problems.
Many thanks.

I did report what I had 'witnessed' to the AAIB on the day after the incedent. They haven't come back to me so I guess it was not of much use.
