Take Greece for example. They borrow stacks of money, SPEND IT then when its time to pay what the owe they run around setting fire to stuff, complaining about banks/capitalism etc. Do these people think money grows on tree's? The Labour party are the same borrowing loads of money, frittering it on junk (eg free laptop that you can sell on ebay) but then can't accept that the country needs to pay it back or cut back.

Gordon Brown as Chancellor was just like one of those Metrosexuals who lives with his mum and dad and spends more money than he earns on D&G,Versace and going to "futborlers bars".

Bring on Thursday!

The average Greek protestor blames the government and does not want to pay for the governments mis-management. I know it is a deeper issue, but that is what I believe they think. Just wait for the unions to start wibbling about cuts over here towards the end of 2010...

Most of the st in Greece happened under the centre-right (like Dave C's mob) New-Democracy party. The current government has been in less than a year - it is called the Panhellenic Socialist Movement but is very centre of left and, like our current Labour party, not particularly socialist.

Greece was fked over by the banks and it's decision to join the Euro.

Well it's not their fault is it, it's those greedy capitalists' fault for lending them all that money in the first place.

Haven't you noticed the 100 billion that Gordy has 'redistributed' from UK private pension investments since he was Chancellor?

There was an excellent blog in the Wail last week from a British concert musician who moved to Greece for more artistic freedom and to get away from London. He was very pleased with his change. Mentioned that the greek civil servants only go to work when they feel like it, some posts although technically filled never have anyone turn up to do the job (absenteeism by 35-45% is normal, permanent absenteeism runs at 18%) and these people are unfireable with a non-removeable pension). He also mentioned that bribery is the only way to get anything from a civil servant. The poor man on the street is getting reamed while all these burocrats fill their boots....
Socialism means the socialist fills his boots to the detriment of the rest while still proclaiming he's protecting the poor and the workers, some excellent parallels in NuLabia and the Unions, just champagne socialist the lot of them. For other examples see bLIAR (£20million in 1 year), DDR, USSR, North Korea etc...

Not the best example as there was a thread here with loads of replies dragged out of them under FOI that did actually demonstrate the scheme had controls to prevent fraud.

Missed that - would it be issue of pre-loaded credit cards from approved providers, with the correct sum, for use only at approved outlets, for approved laptops?

Did the scheme also have controls to prevent sale after purchase and if so what were they?

There are zero controls after the purchase, and there are documented responses from government members that there are no controls.

smile

Indeed.

My post queried the relevance of fraud safeguards to a situation relating to resale, but there's no tongue-in-cheek smiley when you need one!

The socialist mentality tends to be that the end justifies the means. The end being a socialist utopia of happy and contented people. The means being to make anyone who they percieve as already happy to assist them in creating the end.

When the end does not appear as expected they declare that more must be done. They need more time, more money, more effort, another revolution and another five year plan. When slogans and peer pressure fail to get the means they resort to taxes and laws.

When they fail, and they always do, they resort to denial and blame. People didn't contribute enough, the taxes weren't high enough, another purge is needed, the wealth of anyone who hasn't fully commited to their cause must be taken, then, and only then, will the utopia arrive.

When their failure is complete and someone else clears up the mess the disaster is not their fault. It's all because of nasty and greedy people. Their opponents caused far more misery and problems than they did. Their opponents are all evil and greedy whereas they are good so it has to be this way. When confronted with bare numbers that show this to be a lie they respond by stating that their greed and misery doesn't count because, deep down, even when the people suffered, they knew that socialism was good.

In their eyes the end always justifies the means.

The trouble is that the end is always unobtainable and the means always finite.

BS. it was fvcked over by not collecting tax, having the most generous welfare state in europe and endemic corruption at evry level. comically they retire ten years earlier than the poor germans who are now blackmailed into bailing them out.
Must be something to do with the warmer climate - the work ethic in southern Europe is certainly more 'relaxed' than northern Europe. I have been told many a time that northern Italy pays the taxes for southern Italy..

No you are not entitled. They are solely for people who are unable to afford one, as their state benefits exceed the value of to going to work. Such deserving people would not otherwise be able afford their laptop, plus a 50in plasma and blueray player, unless the laptop was state subsidised at a rate of 100%.
